The exhibition and related catalogue focused on the works of Anthony van Dyck, a leading court painter of the early Stuarts, Wenceslaus Hollar, a notable etcher and draftsman, and various miniature painters who worked during that period. Contents include: Introduction; Catalogue :Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599 - 1641) includes details of 24 works; Essay on Wenceslaus Hollar followed by detailed descriptions of items 25 -77; Miniature (essay) followed by detailed descriptions of items 78 - 127, including works by Nicholas Hilliard (1547 - 1619), Peter Oliver (1594 - 1647), Isaac Oliver (1565-1617), John Hoskins (1595-1665), David des Granges, Alexander Cooper (1631-54); Samuel Cooper (1609 - 72); Daniel Mytens (1590-1647); Sir Peter PaulRubens (1577-1640); Edward Bower (d. 1667). [From page 2] There are twenty-six pictures by Van Dyck in the royal collection. Only The Hermitage in Leningrad can boast of a larger number. In this exhibition room has been found for all the Queen's Van Dycks except for the posthumous portraits of James I and Henry, Prince of Wales, which the artist painted for the royal family portrait gallery at Somerset House; the frontal portrait of Henrietta Maria designed for Bernini (see below, No. 17); the 'greate peece' of Charles I, his queen and their two eldest children, which is distorted by enlargements made in the time of William III; and the portrait of Beatrice de Cusance. All the pictures by Van Dyck in this exhibition have recently been cleaned and it is doubtful if the student could see anywhere a more beautiful display of the work of this painter. The exhibition also includes, from the Royal Library, a selection of prints by Hollar to illustrate the world in which Van Dyck lived, and a group of miniatures which contains portraits of the Stuart family, their friends and courtiers, which can show us sometimes how Van Dyck's sitters looked when they were seen through other eyes.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Marking the third centenary of the office of Prime Minister, this book tells its extraordinary story, explaining how and why it has endured longer than any other democratic political office in world history. Sir Anthony Seldon, historian of Number 10 Downing Street, explores the lives and careers, loves and scandals, successes and failures, of all our great Prime Ministers. From Robert Walpole and William Pitt the Younger, to Clement Attlee and Margaret Thatcher, Seldon discusses which of our Prime Ministers have been most effective and why. He reveals the changing relationship between the Monarchy and the office of the Prime Minister in intimate detail, describing how the increasing power of the Prime Minister in becoming leader of Britain coincided with the steadily falling influence of the Monarchy. This book celebrates the humanity and frailty, work and achievement, of these 55 remarkable individuals, who averted revolution and civil war, leading the country through times of peace, crisis and war. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Añadir al carritoTaschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - First published in 1988, the aim of this book can be stated in Nietzsche's words: 'To look at science from the perspective of the artist, but at art from that of life'. The title contests the notions that science alone can provide us with the most objective truth about the world, and that artistic endeavour can produce nothing more valuable than entertainment. O'Hear argues that art and the study of art are not indispensable aspects of human life, and that this is equally as important as the investigation of the natural world.
