En raison de son exhaustivité et de son organisation cohérente, le De proprietatibus rerum s'affirme, pendant le XIIIe et le XVe siècle, comme un des principaux recueils encyclopédiques ; son succès se mesure au grand nombre de manuscrits (environ 200), de traductions en langue vernaculaire (en anglo-normand, en italien, en français, en provençal, en anglais, en espagnol, en néerlandais), et d'éditions imprimées (environ 50 entre 1470 et 1609). Alors que l'intérêt des médiévistes pour l'encyclopédie de Barthélemy l'Anglais n'a cessé de croître durant les dernières décennies, et que le De proprietatibus rerum constitue une source privilégiée pour un grand nombre de disciplines, le texte originel ne restait accessible qu'à travers les anciennes éditions imprimées. Ce premier volume offre l'introduction générale, qui présente l'uvre de Barthélemy et son contexte, sa diffusion manuscrite et sa postérité, décrit les manuscrits sélectionnés et énonce les principes éditoriaux suivis.
