Nova totius geographica was published in Amsterdam by Johannes Covens and Cornelis Mortier. Atlas Coelestis was published by Valck & Schenk in Amsterdam. The works were published between c1700 and 1722.The volumes are bound in full calf with beautiful gold gilt details, spine with nine compartments, spandrels, and spheres, boards framed by gilded lace. Each volume is housed in modern portfolio style boxes. There are 198 maps and engravings, 197 feature original hand-coloring and 1 without, 29 of these engravings are celestial charts. Volume 1 includes title / frontispiece and 101 double page maps. Volume 2 includes 65 double page maps, 3 double page prints, and the celestial plates from Cellarius with title / frontispiece, 29 double page star charts, and 1 black and white map by Simon Janz. This is considered a composite atlas assembled according to the collector published and sold by Valck and Schenk from various authors and cartographers.Included in the terrestrial atlas are 169 maps and engravings: three maps of the world, two polar projections, 128 maps of Europe, 21 of Asia & Middle East, 6 of Africa, 7 of the Americas. There are also 3 plates depicting parts of warships, sea flags, and military architecture. Most of the maps are stamped or signed with Gerard Valck, Gerard and Leonard Valck, Petrus Schenk (I and II), or Gerard Valck and Petrus Schenk. The maps were engraved after maps by Jaillot, Blaeu, Visscher, Jansson, Sanson, Pirnacker, Moses Pitt, Labanna or Van Loon. Thirty-nine of the engravings from the atlas are from the rare Atlantis composite atlas sylloge compendiosa by Gerard and Lenard Valck published circa 1702. Ten of the engravings are from Petrus Schenk's Atlas Contractuspublished circa 1700.Pieter Schenk the Elder [Petrus or Peter] (1660-1711) was a German cartographer, engraver, and publisher. He studied under Gerhard Valck. The two families would be active print sellers, globe makers, and publishers.Included in Cellarius's celestial atlas is an allegorical frontispiece, title page, index sheet, and 29 originally hand-colored double page celestial engravings. Cellarius's engravings are remarkably decorated and some of the most visually appealing of the era. The frontispiece for the work was engraved by Frederik Hendrik van den Hove. At least ten of the engravings were done by Johannes van Loon. The classical constellations were illustrated after Jan Pieterszoon Saenredam."Among the most astonishing plates of the atlas are those of the "Christian sky" with, on the Christian planisphere showing the southern hemisphere (pl.24), the Ship Argo replaced by Noah's Ark, or on the boreal Christian planisphere (pl.25), the representation of six of the saints of the zodiac including Saint Andrew with his cross (replacing Taurus and the cluster of Hyades), the Sepulchre (replacing Andromeda) and the Red Sea (replacing the river aridanus). Similarly, the plate Hemisphaerium Australis Coeli & Terrae Scenographia (pl.28) depicts a never-before-used view of the sky, in which the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere are superimposed on the map of the globe. The arrangement was ingenious, but it is doubtful whether it was of practical use to astronomers of the time. Aesthetic concern therefore prevailed." Duplicate letter-press title-page with a repaired loss to the upper edge. Plates numbered in ink manuscript verso. With pigment oxidation to the verso of the plates, consistent with original coloration. A very good copy indeed, with fine color. Andreas Cellarius (or Keller, ca. 1596-1665) was born in Germany and worked principally in Holland. From 1637 he was rector of the Latin school in Hoorn, North Holland's third city (after Amsterdam and Haarlem). Apart from this, little is known except for his production of the revolutionary Harmonia macrocosmica in 1660. The XVIIc was a time of revolution in the field of astronomy; Copernicus's heliocentricity of the XVIc released science from the shackles of Aristotle, paving the way for Brahe, Galileo, Kepler and Newton. Cellarius made visible those great strides, integrating ancient astronomy and mythology and forming the armature of modern astronomical illustration. By 1708 -- the publication date of this second edition, with the only change being the addition of Valk's and Schenk's names to the engraved title-page -- the world of astronomy had progressed considerably. Newton's publications came to reshape and to dominate the field (along with several others) from the 1680's, and yet Cellarius's visualizations and aestheticization of the cosmos held then as they do now an appeal that has never been surpassed. Die wunderbare künstle…rische Gestaltung der einzelnen Originalkarten ist in Kupferstichen ausgeführt, die sämtlich hervorragend handkoloriert und glücklicherweise gut erhalten sind. Solche Originale forderten den erfahrenen Reproduktionstechniker und Drucker geradezu heraus, mit allen heute zur Verfügung stehenden technischen Mitteln einen Nachdruck vorzunehmen. Der Druck im Offsetverfahren sollte möglichst dem Original entsprechen und eine faksimilegetreue Wiedergabe sein. Die Reproduktionen sind deshalb in acht Farben ausgeführt, um die Konturenschärfe des Kupferstiches und seine intensiv gedeckte Schwärze weitgehend zu erreichen, in den Farbnuancen jedoch nicht an die Begrenzung der sogenannten kurzen, vierfarbigen Skala gebunden zu sein. Für den Andruck und Auflagendruck fanden unsere vorbeschichteten Ozasol-Positiv-Druckplatten Verwendung, deren chromund kolloidfreie Schicht jeden nadelspitzen Punkt für den Druck einwandfrei erhält und dadurch auch feinste Verläufe und alle anderen Tonwerte erreichen läßt. Das ist in diesem Falle von besonderer Bedeutung, weil hier ja nicht nur farbige Karten zu reproduzieren waren, sondern auch die hauchfeine Patina der alten Kunstblätter und äußerst zart verlaufende Stockflecken originalgetreue Wiedergabe finden mußten. Der Druck auf Büttenpapier war eine Selbstverständlichkeit, um die Güte der Reproduktionen zu erhöhen. Die hier vorliegende Druckleistung zeugt von der Vollendung des Offsetdrucks und von der hohen Qualität unserer vorbeschichteten Ozasol-Positiv-Druckplatten, mit denen die gestellte Aufgabe glatt und ohne Schwierigkeit sowohl im Kopierprozeß als auch im Druck gelöst werden konnte. / Die Harmonia Macrocosmica ist ein historischer Sternatlas von Andreas Cellarius mit zahlreichen Kupferstichen, der 1660 von Johannes Janssonius veröffentlicht wurde. Der erste Teil enthielt Stiche der Weltansichten von Claudius Ptolemäus, Nikolaus Kopernikus und Tycho Brahe. Am Ende befinden sich Sternenkarten mit klassischen Sternenkonstellationen sowie Darstellungen, die der christlichen Betrachtung folgen und 1627 von Julius Schiller in seinem Coelum Stellatum Christianum von 1627 eingeführt wurden. Der Titel lautet in deutscher Übersetzung: Die Harmonie der großen Welt oder allgemeiner und neuer Atlas darstellend die allgemeine und neue Kosmographie des gesamten erschaffenen Universums. In welchem die harmonische Verbindung aller Weltkreise nach den widerstreitenden Meinungen verschiedener Autoren auch die Himmelsbeschreibung oder der ganze Himmelskreis die Theorie der Planeten und der Erdkugel in der Ebene und in szenischer Darstellung sowie in neuen Beschreibungen vor Augen gestellt werden.Ein neues, zuvor nie gesehenes Werk, nützlich für Menschen aller Stände überaus ergötzlich, höchst nützlich und schmuckvoll. Das Werk im Großfolioformat hat einen Umfang von mehr als 350 Seiten mit 29 Doppelblättern in der Größe von 50 cm × 60 cm mit den Kupferstichtafeln. Es erschien im Verlag von Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam, der für die Astronomie und Kartographie wohlbekannt war. Die Harmonia Macrocosmica beinhaltet 29 großformatige, doppelseitige Kupferstichtafeln, dazu ein dem Titel vorangestelltes Kupferstichblatt, das Frontispiz. Auch das Titelblatt ist großzügig gestaltet, mit aufwendiger Typographie, unterschiedlicher Typengröße, kursiv abgesetzten Teilen und vier Textblöcken. Zwischen Titelschrift und Druckervermerk steht ein kleines Bildchen: zwei männliche Figuren, links mit einem Spaten, rechts einem astronomischen Instrument, zwischen ihnen eine astronomische Armillarsphäre und darüber ein Posaunenengel mit wehendem Schriftband Vivitur ingenio (er lebt von seinem Verstand). In diesem Zusammenhang könnte in diesem kleinen Bildchen die Einheit ausgedrückt sein zwischen der praktischen Tätigkeit des Landmanns, der mit seiner Arbeit der Gesellschaft und damit auch der Wissenschaft die Lebensgrundlagen verschafft, während über beiden der Engel als Verkünder des göttlichen Wortes schwebt.
