La aspiración de un cristianismo más puro tenía uno de sus ejes en no reconocer ninguna supremacía temporal al papado provocando simultáneamente la busqueda por la Reforma de apoyo por el poder institucional ?nacional? y su apoyo a ese poder instituido en la nación frente a poderes de otras naciones. Esta circunstancia originó que la Reforma fuese articulándose desde mediados del s. XVI en torno a religiones nacionales, las iglesias reformadas francesa, suiza, germana. tan numerosas como ?estados? existían, siendo las más complejas las de los numerosos estados germanos. Y si cada una de ellas afrontó tener que ponerse de acuerdo interiormente en sus dogmas principales (en parte como reacción al Concilio de Trento, 1545-1563, un proceso paralelo de las mismas características, para definir los dogmas a los que no se renunciaba y cual era la interpretación que iba a ser la ortodoxa de esos dogmas), muchas de aquellas iglesias reformadas afrontaron también sentar las bases comunes para reconocerse como de la misma confesión. Y si estos acuerdos fructificaron en algunos momentos unificando algunas (el luteranismo germano en La fórmula de la Concordia de 1577, por ejemplo) otros intentos de acuerdo no tuvieron éxito, siempre con el telón de fondo de las guerras de religión y de las alianzas políticas que podían generarse. Uno de esos intentos de estudiar las diferencias para tratar de llegar a acuerdos fue el conocido como coloquio de Montbèliard, reunido en realidad para un asunto aparentemente menor: el de si los exiliados franceses hugonotes (calvinistas), huidos del rigor del edicto de 1585, podían mantener los ritos de su confesión en la ciudad que los había acogido, Montbèliard, de un estado, Wittemberg, en el que era obligatorio ser de una confesión, la recogida en la fórmula de La Concordia, que tenía ritos diferentes a causa de un distinto contenido dogmático teológico(1). En el coloquio, patrocinado por el conde Federico de Montbèliard, participaron Jakob Andrea (impulsor de la fórmula de La Concordia) por la parte luterana local y Thèodore de Beze, calvinista, en defensa de las posiciones hugonotas. ?Discutieron sobre la Santa Cena, lo que dio lugar a una extensa disputa sobre la doctrina de las dos naturalezas de Cristo. También debatieron sobre el adorno y la música propios de las iglesias, el bautismo y la predestinación. Sólo pudieron ponerse de acuerdo en poder discrepar en lo que hacía a la música y el ornato de las iglesias. En los demás asuntos, Andrea acusó a Beza de sostener las doctrinas del Corán, calificando a continuación la doctrina reformada de diabólica y destinada a destruir las almas.
