Kontrovers, weil sie auf der einen Seite als Meilenstein in der Logistik gesehen wird. Auf der anderen Seite hat sich die Technologie aber auch mit kritischen Stimmen auseinanderzusetzen. Auch wenn viele durchaus kritische 'Headlines' aus den an die breite Öffentlichkeit gerichteten Medien entstammen, so stellt die anhaltende Diskussion dennoch eine Art Spiegelbild der gesellschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung dar. Ferner ist jedoch auch, wie zu zeigen sein wird, das sozusagen fachliche Publikum bzgl. der Thematik durchaus differenziert bis konträr eingestellt.Das Ziel des vorliegenden Werkes ist es, die Bedeutung der RFID-Technologie zu objektivieren. Bedeutung meint dabei, zu klären, ob, und wenn inwieweit sich das Konzept dieser sich stetig entwickelnden Technologe bisher etabliert hat und zukünftig etablieren kann. Fokus der Betrachtung ist dabei die Supply Chain im Konsumgüterbereich.Zur Erreichung dieses Zieles ist dazu zunächst das Untersuchungsumfeld (Supply Chain im Konsumgüterbereich) als auch das Untersuchungsobjekt (RFID-Technologie) abzugrenzen bzw. zu erörtern. Neben dem generellen Funktionsprinzip wird dabei auch auf die bisherige Entwicklung der Technologie eingegangen. Erkenntnisse aus zwei betrachteten Pilot-Projekten werden skizziert, um einen praktischen Bezug herzustellen. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der betriebswirtschaftlich wichtigen Frage, wie es um die Wirtschaftlichkeit der RFID-Technologie bestellt ist, bzw. wie sie sich ermitteln lässt, leitet in die Erörterung eines Stärken-Schwächen-Profils über. Hieraus soll abschließend die Leistungsfähigkeit der Technologie abgeleitet werden. Ein Ausblick auf mögliche zukünftige Entwicklungen schließt dieses Werk ab.
