Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: Very Good. Minor shelf wear, binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. This collection presents, for the first time, a much-needed synthesis of the major research themes and findings that characterize the Woodland Period in the southeastern United States. The Woodland Period (ca. 1200 B.C. to A.D. 1000) has been the subject of a great deal of archaeological research over the past 25 years. Researchers have learned that in this approximately 2000-year era the peoples of the Southeast experienced increasing sedentism, population growth, and organizational complexity. At the beginning of the period, people are assumed to have been living in small groups, loosely bound by collective burial rituals. But by the first millennium A.D., some parts of the region had densely packed civic ceremonial centers ruled by hereditary elites. Maize was now the primary food crop. Perhaps most importantly, the ancient animal-focused and hunting-based religion and cosmology were being replaced by solar and warfare iconography, consistent with societies dependent on agriculture, and whose elites were increasingly in competition with one another. This volume synthesizes the research on what happened during this era and how these changes came about while analyzing the period's archaeological record. In gathering the latest research available on the Woodland Period, the editors have included contributions from the full range of specialists working in the field, highlighted major themes, and directed readers to the proper primary sources. Of interest to archaeologists and anthropologists, both professional and amateur, this will be a valuable reference work essential to understanding the Woodland Period in the Southeast.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Good. Photogravures produced by Anderson Lamb Co. Ilustrador. 1st Edition. Here is "The American Spirit in Education" by Edwin E. Slosson, as issued in the "Chronicles of America Series" (No. 33), and published by Yale University Press. This is the 1921 First Edition, bound in the series' ornate cloth binding. The dark gray of the cloth is embellished with gilt and white design. The series was edited by Allen Johnson. This copy still has the original dust-jacket , which has ensured that the book is in lovely condition - bright, clean and attractive, and remains mostly unopened (ie: the leaves have not been separated. It was in the 19th century that deeper American attention to pedagogy was established. This was in large part because of Horace Mann, who tackled the cause of education in a matter not seen before. Other educators are covered in this book, such as Elihu Yale, James Bowdoin, De Witt Clinton, James Smithson, Justin S. Morrill, Henry Barnard, Ezra Cornell, Matthew Vassar and others. As well as individuals there are a number of schools of higher education that were created early in the history of our nation, and these are discussed: colleges such as Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Bowdoin, William and Mary College, Columbia College, Van Renssalaer Polytechnical Institute and Emma Willard's Seminary in Troy NY, to name just a few. Published in 1918, the book does not follow the progress of education through the twentieth century and beyond, but for the two centuries previous, starting with Colonial times, admirable in its coverage. Unfortunately sparse attention (practically none) is given to Black institutions of higher education; nor are Native Americans in the picture, except tangentially. SERIES : The Chronicles of America (vol. 33) SERIES EDITOR : Allen Johnson TITLE : The American Spirit in Education (Abraham Lincoln Edition) AUTHOR : Edwin E. Slosson (Edwin Emery Slosson, 1865 - 1929) IMPRINT : Yale University Press PLACE : New Haven DATE : 1921 EDITION : First Edition - (no further printings indicated, as per Yale's statement in Zempell) PHYSICAL DETAILS : Series Hardcover (Each book stands on its own merit); Contains a frontispiece portrait of Horace Mann and 12 illustrations interspersed through the text (these are monochrome gravures with tissue guards done by the Anderson Lamb Company in New York. 2 of the pictures are reproduction of photographs taken by H. P. cook in Richmond, Virginia ; these photo reproductions have a slight bluish tint). The book has a Bibliographical Note and an Index; x + 30 pages; 5" x 8" ; smooth dark gray cloth covers the boards and spine; both the spine and the front board have lettering stamped in gilt; both the spine and front board have ornate decorative embellishment, with simple line borders. The spine follows this embellishment, except in a lesser manner. Top edge of text-block is gilt. Dust-jacket, which is seldom present, is printed black on light gray. CONDITION -- BOOK : NEAR FINE -- DUST-JACKET : GOOD ONLY --This is a previously owned book that remains clean and attractive, having never been read (the leaves are mostly not separated ) -- With the following particulars noted" EXTERIOR -- The cover is clean and the gilt decoration bright. I see one tiny chip in the gilt border of the front board. Top text-block gilding is still bright. Fore- and bottom text-block edges are clean. BINDING -- Solid INTERIOR -- Clean and free of marking. The leaves of the text are still joined (unopened); you will be the first to have read this 1921 book. All of the tissue guards are unavoidably lightly toned. DUST-JACKET -- Loss, chipping, and some small tears along the edges; several damp stains display on the rear panel; spine panel is darkened ; surface rub is obvious, especially on the spine panel. the jacket will be protected from further wear by a clear, mylar cover. The presence of the jacket - no common thing - is what has protected the binding from wear and kept it so bright.
