8vo. 281, [1] pp. With photo frontisp., photo plates, plates, illustrations, historiated initials. Pictorial blue publisher's cloth, cover art in gilt, silver & red of musher on an iceflow, gilt lettering on spine (minor shelfwear, slight rubbing), still VG bright copy, from the library of former California State Librarian, Gary Kurutz, and Joseph L[uke] Janulaw (1893-1937), a Los Angeles, CA fireman, w/ ownership markings on front pastedown. First edition of this sensationalistic Klondike gold rush memoir recounting the experiences of 18 gold seekers from the YMCA setting out from New York Feb. 1, 1897. After voyaging on a condemned brigantine with a drunken captain, they purportedly attempted the Malaspina Glacier trek to the gold fields, traversing from Yakutat Bay across the Wrangell-St. Elias range, and dropping into the headwaters of the Tanana and Yukon Rivers. The absorbing tale is filled with contradictions as it relates the loss of three into ice crevasses, madness while wintering in a cabin, starving retreat across icefields, and finally rescue by a passing revenue cutter. Atlas folio. 14.5 x 21.5 in. 36 pp. With lithographed photos, text woodcut illustrations throughout (including 1 double-page panoramic birds-eye). Lithographed softcovers, front cover art w/ gold-tinted embellishments of The Largest Gold Nugget discovered by George W. Carmack, from No. 8 El Dorado, map on back cover execured by Warren C. Wilkins of the gold stikes in the Yukon (chipping, edgewear, some scuffing, closed tear neatly repaired, rebacked), still VG- copy from the library of Gary Kurutz. First Shorey Book's edition of this famed Klondike gold rush promotional magazine originally published in Dawson, N.W.T. & San Francisco, CA which was projected to be published quarterly, however Moore, and his partners Charles Meadows, & Wilkins were later sued in Nov., 1898, and appear to have been driven out of business in the Yukon. The impossibly scarce original publication issued April 1st, 1898 touted all of the major gold strikes heretofore made in the Alaska-Yukon Territories, the potential for land development, nicely illustrated with photographs, and copies were embellished with gold ink arching over mushers and gold miners. The last copy to appear at auction was in 1969 in the famed Streeter sale (3586), and the copy used to create this fine lithographed reproduction was oend by Dorothy Pattinson of Fairbanks, AK who at the time had loaned it to the Pullen Alaska Museum's Klondike Exhibit at the Seattle Center Food Circus balcony, on the grounds of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair. Worldcat locates 9 copies of the Shorey facsimile (U of Victoria, WI Historical Soc., BLM, Kenai Peninsula, U of AK, CWU, EWU, Western, U of Alberta); The legal case documents spelling the demise of Messers. Moore, Meadows & Wilkins are held by the Huntington Library, HM 27914; Not in Kurutz, Klondike & Alaska Gold Rushes. …

8vo. xi, [1], 514 pp. Frontisp., 3 plates. Olive-gray decorated publisher's cloth, olive-green locked heart,s white lettering front cover & spine, w/ d.j. embossed illustrated cover art, featuring raised embossed gold nugget floating above silhouette grasping hands (light shelfwear, very minor creasing), still a NF/NF copy. First edition of the noted British-Canadian poet's daring tragedy set against the backdrop of the Klondike Gold Rush, the madness of the stampede of gold-seekers to Alaska, and the hero's deprivations, struggles, and conflicts in the gold fields, and finally finding love with an abandoned young Jewish-American woman, only to lose her at the end. At the time this was one of the best-selling novels of the Alaska Gold Rush, and was later the first "Talkie" movie on the Klondike featuring Harry Carey and Dolores Del Rio, released by M-G-M in their short-lived widescreen process with a synchronized musical score and sound effects. Exceedingly scarce in original dustjacket.…

Condición: Near Fine. Sheet music issued at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush, capitalizing directly on the surge of public interest following the discoveries in the Yukon in 1896?1897. The lithographed title page, signed in style by Robert Teller, shows a dramatic scene of prospectors working a gold deposit in the mountains, with two miners in the foreground bent over a pile of freshly uncovered gold, tools in hand. Theodore August Metz was a German-born musician trained on violin in Hanover who emigrated to the United States and worked various trades before establishing himself as a bandleader and composer in Chicago?s late 19th-century popular music scene. He achieved national prominence with ?There?ll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight? (1896?97), a widely performed marching tune that became especially popular during the Spanish-American War and in minstrel and touring band repertories. OCLC 726910235, locating a single copy at the Levy Collection. Covers detached, contents complete, good, with lithographed cover in particularly bright and attractive condition. Folio sheet music, complete. Illustrated color lithograph title page by Robert Teller.…

Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Very slight loss at a few fold intersections. Close left margin. Size 25 x 32.5 Inches. This 1898 Matthew Hendges map of Alaska captures the region near the height of the Klondike Gold Rush. Frontier gold rushes are an integral part of American history of the 19th century and, even today, capture the imagination of those hoping to strike it rich. A Closer Look Coverage embraces territorial Alaska as well as adjacent parts of the Yukon, with gold regions highlighted in yellow and 'Gold District' boldly written across central Alaska. An inset of the Klondike (Juneau to Forty Mile Creek) appears in the upper right, with gold discoveries highlighted. Red overprinting notes overland and river routes into the notoriously inaccessible gold region. Red overprinting illustrates the same inland routes on the larger main map of Alaska, along with the 'monthly mail route' from Seattle and the steamer route from San Francisco. Other resource deposits, including coal, silver, copper, platinum, mercury, and oil, are noted. An inset in the lower left depicts the westernmost Aleutian Islands from Seguam Island to Attu. Klondike Gold Rush The Klondike Gold Rush, ignited in 1896, was a frenetic migration of prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in northwestern Canada following the discovery of gold by local miners. This gold rush transformed the landscape and the lives of thousands, as over 100,000 individuals, driven by the allure of wealth, embarked on a grueling journey towards the remote wilderness, facing harsh climates, treacherous terrains, and immense hardships. Despite the arduous conditions, the promise of gold attracted fortune-seekers from around the globe, leading to the near-instant development of Dawson City and leaving a lasting legacy. Gold was discovered near Nome in western Alaska in 1899, and many prospectors left to try their luck in these new goldfields. Boomtown populations dwindled, and gold production peaked in 1903. Today, the legend surrounding the Klondike Gold Rush still beckons tourists. Publication History and Census This map was compiled and drawn by Matthew Hendges under the supervision of Harry King for the General Land Office and printed by the Norris Peters Company in 1898. Well represented in institutional collections. References: Rumsey 6402.001. OCLC 779516367.…
