While performing the last rites of his mother (in the face of opposition from other Vedantins), Shankaracharya must have realized that some of the Vedantic messages were not "practical". In 1823, Rammohun Roy was deeply hurt to see Vedantic scholars promoting "escapism". In 1896, Swami Vivekananda gave talks on his vision of Practical Vedanta, to fulfill which he established, in 1897, Ramakrishna Mission as a non-political organization. The scope of Practical Vedanta was widened in the 20th century, by the contributions of Tilak-Aurobindo-Tagore-Gandhi. The whole world admired this great Vedantic movement. In the beginning of the 21st century, Western scholars and activists (drawing inspiration from Vedanta and other philosophies) have taken the lead in further updating of Vedanta, by attaching high priority to the welfare of non-human beings. This pioneering book studies, not only these five contributions, but also three later ones, the most recent being the campaign for "Living Vedanta" (presented by Will Tuttle in his own words). The conceptual origin of this book is linked with the study and research that the authors did in USA from 1953 onward in association with Alan Watts who laid open vast field of research opportunities connected with Buddhism. The research on 'Lokasamgraha' (Good of the world) which has similarities with Sarvodaya picked up steam in 1987. Their first book on Lokasamgraha was published in 1993, under the title The Social Role of the Gita: How and Why. The main finding of that book, viz. that the social message of 'Bhagavad-Gita', was 'Lokasamgraha', which received strong support from Gandhian scholars as well as university professors. This prompted them to extend the coverage of research to books which have been influenced by Bhagavad-Gita. While looking for other texts that could be included in the research program, the authors came across Dr. Radhakrishnan's remark (made in 1948) that the most important Mahayana text (The Lotus Sutra) is indebted to Bhagavad-Gita. In fact, quite independently of this remark, their research inevitably meant taking a close look at the important phenomenon of 'Engaged Buddhism'. In this process, they discovered that, while many of the engaged Buddhists had been inspired by the Lotus Sutra, some of them had been inspired by Shantideva's Bodhicaryavatara. Although Anu-Gita is an important part of the Maha-bharata, it has so far not been presented in a simple form to common people, with the result that most people do not even know that such a book exists. The prefix 'Anu' denotes 'after', so Anu-Gita literally means 'Gita occuring after'. In the Mahabharata, Bhagavat-Gita occurs in Parva No. 14. (In all, there are 18 Parvas in the Mahabharata). It is well known that the Gita was taught by Lord Krishna to Arjuna on the battle field of Kuruksetra. So it was a time of crisis at the time of Anu-Gita. In fact, the Mahabharata war was over and peace was established in the Kingdom, under the rule of Yudhisthira (whom every one including Arjuna supported). But the format of Anu-Gita is different from that of the Gita. In the Gita, there was dialogue between Krishna and Arjuna. On the other hand, in Anu-Gita, Krishna makes use of three ancient dialogues. Because of this, Anu-Gita has a lot of repetitions, which have made it longer than the Gita. For example, Anu-Gita has thirty-six chapters (compared to eighteen chapters in the Gita), and 1040 shlokas (compared to 700 shlokas in the Gita). In order to present Anu-Gita in an easy-to-read version, the authors have omitted the repetitions, and have selected 400 shlokas. But they have retained all the main teachings of Anu-Gita. Most people (even in India) have not heard the name of Anu-Gita. This is so because, although Anu-Gita is an important part of the Mahabharata, no scholarly study of it, in a simple language, has so far been published. This gap will be filled by this pioneering book, which explains under what circumstances was the Gita taught by Lord Krishna to Arjuna, for the second time. This book is divided into two parts. Part I presents the Sanskrit-shlokas of Anu-Gita, along with their translation in simple English. Part II explains the main points of similarity, as well as dissimilarity, between Gita and Anu-Gita.
