Board show spotting and soiling, front board has stains which include a drink ring and possible moisture marks on the outside edge of both boards. Internal binding has some issues: hinges are cracked front and rear boards and text pages have some pulling though all pages are attached and secure. Frontispiece still has tissue guard and the foldout map and the rear of the book is still present. Pages are tone due to age and there is some spotting and foxing. Front pastedown contains the bookplate contains a personal bookplate from the private library of W. G. Stout and backside of front end page has a bit of writing in the corner.

The book is bound in a full calf prize binding of the University of Edinburgh with gilt borders and device and marbled endpapers and page edges; the binding has some light wear and remains handsome and sound. The endpapers have a prize plate and a later owner's inscription. There is some light foxing throughout with the plates and some pages more heavily affected. Frontispiece, xii +[1] + 576.

A first edition copy of this biography of the life of James David Forbes, written by John Campbell Shairp, Peter Guthrie Tait, and A. Adams-Reilly. James David Forbes was a Scottish physicist and glaciologist who worked extensively on the conduction of heat and seismology. He was a resident of Edinburgh for most of his life, educated at its University and a professor there from 1833 until he became principal of the United College of St Andrews in 1859. This copy is bound in full calf with beautiful gilt designs and lettering along the spine. It contains 6 plates, some of which are photographs, and a folding map to the rear. The previous owner's ink signature can be found on the verso of the front free-endpaper, as well as to the recto of the rear free-endpaper. Handsomely bound in full calf with gilt design and lettering on the spine. Externally, minor shelf wear and rubbing, and spine label has a small tear. Previous owner's signature can be found on verso of front free-endpaper as well as to the recto of the rear free-endpaper. Internally, front hinge is starting but remains firm, otherwise firmly bound. First few front free-endpapers contain scattered spotting and a tidemark, and last few pages contain the odd spot, but otherwise pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed. book.
