That the typologies of the numerical symbols are part of an evolutionary process has been well defined and illustrated. The polemic about the earliest epigraphic evidence of the use of the decimal system in India has been resolved. The systematic displacement of the numerical symbols by the decimal figures and the experiment with the application of positional value and the potential zero in Orissan records form an interesting dimension of study. It further addresses the problem of the advent of modern Oriya numerals and examines how the geo-political and linguistic-palaeographical forces operated in determining and standardising them. The chronograms included in the book largely supplement the existing lists prepared by earlier authorities." (jacket) No. 27652 244 pp.

"The book studies the paleography of Orissa from the third to the seventeenth century AD. It focuses on the evolution of the regional script of Orissa from the Brahmi script to the advent of the Modern Oriya script through various intermediate stages. Analyzing several hundreds of copper plate and stone inscriptions and with reproductions from facsimiles of many original inscriptions, the author delves into the palaeographical peculiarities of the scripts prevalent in different sub-regional/regional kingdoms of ancient and Medieval Orissa. He followed the dominant stylistic nomenclatures for studying the scripts and emphasized on the importance of the geo-political forces in determining the writing style of a sub-region/region. The view that the process of 'palaeographical segmentation ran parallel with linguistic segmentation' has been successfully tested in Orissan context. The advent of the proto-regional and regional script of Orissa has been studied in the backdrop of this process. Besides, an attempt has been made to resolve the prolonged debate on the parentage of the Modern Oriya script. It has been argued that political changes and ideologies of the ruling class were some of the determining factors in the growth and development of Oriya language and script. The work will be useful to scholars and students of history, culture, language and literature for understanding the growth and development of languages and scripts in interaction with the political milieu and cultural growth of a region." More than 400 copper-plate grants and 1,000 stone inscriptions ranging from the fourth to the sixteenth century ce have been discovered so far. In this volume, the author has taken extreme care in documenting all the published and unpublished copper-plate grants including the stray plates, spurious charters and the palimpsests. These epigraphs are grouped under different dynasties and the relevant data in each copper-plate inscription have been systematically classified making the volume a descriptive catalogue of the copper-plate inscriptions of Odisha. It, thus, painstakingly furnishes detailed information about the rulers and the beneficiaries, religious persuasion of kings, occasion and purpose of the grants, eras and other astronomical details, officers and persons present at the time of the grants, rights and privileges transferred to the donees, land measures, prevailing currency system of the period, administrative and revenue terms, topographical details, development of language and scripts, and so on. These inscriptions, mostly in Sanskrit, also delineate the system of numeration while specifying the era or days of a month, amount of tax to be paid, land measures, etc. While adopting a comprehensive approach in treating the subject, the book deals with the technique of preparing copper plates for writing the royal deeds; flattening of the metal sheets into rectangular plates, their sizes, positing of the seals, the symbols and legends on the seals, amidst many more pieces of information. This innovative and scholarly work should entice the spirit of students, historians and researchers, especially those who are interested in the history and culture of Odisha. The bibliographical details furnished in the volume will prove to be of immense help to serious scholars working in the field. (jacket).

The present work is a handy volume of all the available inscriptions so far known to us of the several minor ruling dynasties ruling in different sub-regions of early medieval Odisha roughly from the 8th to the 12th century CE. It has two sections: Section I: Introduction and Section II: Texts and Abstracts. In Section I, an analysis of the copper plate inscriptions of twenty minor ruling families have been included. The features of the copper plates and the royal seals attached to them have been narrated, and it also contained the script, language, and orthography of the inscribed texts. The genealogy and chronology of the ruling houses, the locality they held and the land grants they issued have been examined. In Section II, the texts and abstracts of each inscription has been given. Meticulous care has been taken to red cipher the inscriptions from the original facsimiles or fresh photographs and off er our own readings at places. Some of unpublished inscriptions are incorporated in this work for the first time which adds merit to the work. The General Introduction in the beginning of the work is an original piece of work negotiating with the corpus of epigraphically literature of the period and arguing for a spatial spread of state-society in the relatively difficult terrain. The formation of the mandala states in these sub-regions and their political and economic interactions with the larger regional polities have been discussed at length to formulate a perspective on the process of state formation. Sustenance of the regional polities, it is maintained, largely rested on the material foundations than cult appropriations. The process of cult appropriation should be viewed as an afterthought and not a concomitant development.

It is of high antiquity and has a literary tradition of more than 1500 years. The epigraphical sources are singularly important to chart the journey of this vernacular. More than200 inscriptions belonging to the period from the 11th century to the 19th century have been incorporated in this corpus. Adequate care has been given to re-read and re-interprets the inscriptions. The orthographical peculiarities of the inscriptions of the early medieval period suggested how the vernacular speech form was consciously or unconsciously entering the written medium especially in the documentary sections of the official charters written in Sanskrit. This phenomenon was common to South Asian and to be more particular to south Indian vernacular transformations. The book further unfolds adequate reasons for the germination of community identity and regional consciousness among the Oriya literati. It has been clearly demonstrated that the cultural boundary was different from the political boundary. The former had distinct symbols in terms of language, script, race, community, religious beliefs, and traditions. This fostered among the people living within the boundary a sense of commonality in expression and identity. The present narrative further establishes that language as an identity marker was not necessarily a development of the colonial period as has been maintained so far, rather its genesis can be pushed to the medieval period. The comprehensive nature of the work will fill the gap and will be useful to scholars as an indispensable source book for working on linguistics, history, culture, origin and development of Oriya, as well as vernacular development in South Asia.
