Soft cover. Condición: New. KANTARCI, N. CAN (Edited by) The event of a thread: Global narratives in textile. [Exhibition catalogue] = Iplikten cozulenler: Tekstilde kuresel anlatilar. [Sergi katalogu]. Curators: Oyku Ozsoy, Susanne Weiss, Inka Gressel. Istanbul: Istanbul Modern, 2019. 4to., 231 p., color ills. Turkish and Engli…sh. Paperback. New ISBN: 9789756167854 CATALOG: Painting & Sculpture KEYWORDS: Contemprary Art "The Event of a Thread" brings together 25 international contemporary artists, who use textile to create aesthetic and cultural narratives through objects, installations and video works. The title of the exhibition is a quotation from On Weaving (1965), the reference book by Anni Albers, one of the most important artists from the Bauhaus textile workshops. Albers believed that socio-cultural and economic activities impacted textiles, and stated that "Just as it is possible to go from any place to any other, so also, starting from a defined and specialized field, can one arrive at a realization of ever-extending relationships. Thus tangential subjects come into view.?" According to Albers, one could discover "the event of a thread"? at the root of each development. In the exhibition, weaving threads are utilized as a metaphor, which facilitate the interaction of weaving styles, stories and production techniques from different cultures, and mediate the development of new connections between them. Organized in collaboration with the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa, Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen), one of the oldest art institutions in Germany, the exhibition is curated by Susanne Weiss and Inka Gressel on the invitation of ifa and aims to build on the original selection by creating new connections in each institution the exhibition travels to, with the assistance of curators at each institution and the addition of new works from local artists. "The Event of a Thread" features a variety of stories ranging from the tradition of quipu used by ancient Andean cultures in South America to the textile techniques from the indigenous people of Wichí in Argentine and from Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu's revival and adoption of the long-forgotten tradition of yazma (originally used for hand-painted kerchief) to Burhan Dogancay's tapestries created at the Aubusson workshops. The exhibition focuses on the historical, social and cultural meanings of fabrics, investigates the various uses of textile as a tool of expression and presents different artistic positions that interact with one another within the exhibition space. One of the two special areas in the exhibition has been dedicated to Bedri Rahmi Eyuboglu (1911-1975), the first artist to develop a synthesis between painting and embroidery, textiles and yazma traditions in Turkey. A selection of Eyuboglu's yazma in addition to a selection of his never-before-seen fabric-printing block plates are presented in the "The Event of a Thread" exhibition. The other special area in the exhibition has been dedicated to Bauhaus. In this special area, there is a large installation dedicated to Bauhaus, the art school that influenced art and design education around the world upon its establishment by Walter Gropius in Germany, in 1919. Starting in Dresden, "The Event of a Thread" exhibition travelled to Kuwait before making its way to Istanbul. The touring exhibition demonstrates the variety of opportunities provided by textiles as a multifaceted tool of expression in addition to its purpose as a surface produced via the systematic integration of yarn layers, warps and wefts. Social, cultural and historical narratives are untied from threads of fabric and rearranged for us to create new connections between them.

The project will contribute greatly to the promotion of Turkey abroad and is supported by the Innovative and Creative Istanbul Financial Support Program of the Istanbul Development Agency (ISTKA). In a first for Turkey, the program is arranging for artists from all over the world to collaborate with craftspeople in Istanbul under the auspices of a museum. "Guests: Artists and Craftspeople", the first exhibition of Istanbul Modern's International Artist Residency Program, will be open to the art-loving public from 26 February onwards. "Guests: Artists and Craftspeople" features the works of 10 international artists who have been inspired by the crafts of Istanbul. Inviting the viewer to think about Istanbul's long-established craft heritage, the exhibition also includes historical objects that shed light on the cultural richness of Istanbul. These were borrowed from the Harbiye Military Museum and the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality's Libraries and Museums Directorate. Curated by Oyku Ozsoy and Umit Mesci of Istanbul Modern's Curatorial Staff, the exhibition "Guests: Artists and Craftspeople" will be on view until August 23.

Soft cover. Condición: New. Paperback 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 215 p., color ills. Istanbul Modern's new exhibition focuses on 'harbor' as a theme of multiple dimensions as the museum occupies a former dry cargo warehouse transformed into a modern museum building right in the area known as the Port of Istanbul.… Exploring how port areas are reflected in the visual arts, not only as geographical locations but also as sites of social and economic interaction, the exhibition also delves into the symbolic and metaphorical aspects of the concept of 'harbor'. Emphasizing the relationship of the city of Istanbul with the sea and ports, "HARBOR" takes a close look at the cultural and social life that has developed on the seaside and around ports in the art of Turkey from the nineteenth century to the present. Built on curatorial research in the fields of maritime culture in Turkey, social history, and the visual arts, the exhibition also includes a timeline. Summarizing the history of Istanbul through harbors, from archaeological work on the Harbor of Theodosius (Yenikapi) to the present, the timeline highlights major transformations and turning points in the city's relationship with the sea and ports. The "HARBOR" exhibition catalogue features texts, quotes, photographs, and visuals about the artists and works in the exhibition, as well as essays in which the curators present the conceptual framework of the exhibition. Published bilingually in Turkish and English, the catalogue includes the timeline as well as an article about the ports of Istanbul by Prof. Murat Güvenç, director of the Istanbul Studies Center at Kadir Has University, who advised the exhibition team in preparing the timeline. Built at the Haliç Dockyards in Istanbul, the vessel Bastarda was designed as part of the project "Darzana?: Two Arsenals, One Vessel" for the Pavilion of Turkey at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. It was reconstructed within the scope of the exhibition and is on view in the museum courtyard.

Soft cover. Condición: New. Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (32 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 257 p., color and b/w ills. "A first in Turkey, this research exhibition covers this century-old adventure of film in Turkey starting from 1914, considered to mark the birth of the history of cinema in Turkey. The exhibition features moments o…f encounter between film and audience and the amazing collective and individual worlds created by this encounter. Compiling visual and written representations of film such as posters, photographs, box office reports, gala invitations, newspaper clippings and advertisements, lobby cards, and autographed photos of stars, the exhibition aims to render visible the memory of a history whose sources have been poorly preserved and has been kept alive only by personal efforts. "One Hundred Years of Love" begins by treating of the audience's most concrete relationship with cinema, in other words, cinema spaces. Emphasizing that movie theaters are "temples of audience", the exhibition offers a presentation ranging from the first movie houses in Turkey to today's festival halls. Elements connecting the audience with films and the cinema also constitute a major part of the exhibition: Newspaper advertisements, programs and flyers, brochures, magazines, and posters about films distributed by movie theaters. Another important section in the exhibition features scenes from close to 50 Turkish films showing spectators and auditoriums.".
