The Disputatio fidei et intellectus (Montpellier 1303) must be considered Ramon Llull's most lucid explanation of the relation between faith and reason. In a brilliant literary dialogue, he introduces the personified allegorical characters 'Intellectus' and his sister 'Fides', who debate whether the articles of the Christian faith are demonstrable by means of irrefutable rational arguments ('rationes necessariae'). In their extensive introduction, the editors analyse Llull's dynamic concept of faith and reason, comparing it to contemporary accounts. The current edition offers a revised Latin text of the work, previously edited in ROL XXIII (CC CM 115), together with a carefully annotated translation into Catalan. La Disputatio intellectus et fidei (Montpellier 1303) peut etre consideree comme l'expose le plus lucide que Ramon Llull ait jamais fait de la relation entre la foi et la raison. Although metaphysics as a discipline can hardly be separated from Aristotle and his works, the questions it raises were certainly known to authors even before the reception of Aristotle in the thirteenth century. Even without the explicit use of this term the twelfth century manifested a strong interest in metaphysical questions under the guise of "natural philosophy" or "divine science", leading M.-D. Chenu to coin the expression of a twelfth century "eveil metaphysique". In their commentaries on Boethius and under the influence of Neoplatonism, twelfth century authors not only anticipate essential elements of thirteenth century metaphysics, they also make an original contribution to the history of metaphysics by attempting to integrate the theory of first principles, philosophical theology and ontology. This volume offers the first comprehensive introduction in English to the study of the philosopher and theologian Raimundus Lullus (c. 1232-1316). From the 1270s onwards Lullus worked on his Art: a philosophico-theological system which takes the basic concepts of the three monotheistic religions of its time and discusses them by means of rational discourse in order to convince Muslims (and Jews) of the truth of the Christian articles of faith. Revising his Art and extending it across all fields of human knowledge, Lullus created a universal science that strongly influenced thinkers such as Nicholas of Cusa and Leibniz. He produced some 280 works in both Catalan and Latin, the Latin Opera currently being edited in the Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis series. The present Introduction provides a key to Lullus? prolific philosophical and theological output. It is divided into three sections: Lullus' life, his works and his thought, i.e. the Ars. The first section offers a survey of Lullus' eventful life (his conversion, illumination, travels, etc.) and presents the historical context for his intellectual projects. The second section offers a full catalogue of all his works, together with a short summary of each of them, an appreciation of their importance and basic bibliographical information concerning editions and further literature.
