The work contains the best account of diesases of the eye, ear, nose, throat and teeth in the literature in antiquity. In this work is also to be found Aetius' own orignal work on the treatment of aneurysm by ligation of the brachial artery above the sac. Aetius was physician to the Byzantine court of Justinian. Dieser Druck ist überaus selten geworden, so dass nicht nur…Ärzte und Geschichtsschreiber der Heilkunde, sogar Philologen und Alterthumsforscher gewöhnlich nur die lateinische Übersetzung des Werkes aus der Stephan'schen Sammlung (Paris und Frankfurt a.M. 1567) zu citiren pflegen. Mir war es geglückt, ein Exemplar der Aldinischen Ausgabe zu erwerben. Bei dem Studium derselben konnte ich mich bald überzeugen, dass die systematische Abhandlung des Aetius über Augenheilkunde, die natürlich aus der ganzen ihm bekannten griechischen Literatur zusammengestellt ist, aber auch zahlreiche eigene Betrachtungen, besonders über die Behandlung einschliesst, das beste, geistreichste und vollständigste Lehrbuch unseres Faches aus dem Alterthum darstellt, das auf unsere Tage gekommen ist; ja dass wir bis zum achtzehnten Jahrhundert herabsteigen müssen, um Besseres und Lehrreicheres zu finden." Vorrede Aëtios von Amida (502 in Amida, Mesopotamien - 575) war ein byzantinischer Mediziner und Verfasser medizinischer Schriften, insbesondere einer medizinischen Kompilation in 16 Büchern. Er studierte Medizin in Alexandria und wurde Hofmedikus von Justinian I. in Konstantinopel. Seine Schriften beruhen auf älteren medizinischen Werken von Pedanios Dioskurides, Rufus von Ephesos und Galenos. "Aetius also left an exhaustive treatise on diseases of the eye. Although he did not describe cataract, he was familiar with 61 different affections of the eye. Most of his work consists of compilations of earlier writers, but he recorded his own observations on ophthalmic therapeutics. Julius Hirschberg (1843-1925) translated the section of Aëtius's text on ophthalmology into German, Berlin, 1899. " G&M.

According to Giunta, the treatise derives from letters written by Giacomo Valvasone, but in the contents list on leaf 1?r, the word "Incerto" has been cancelled using a type rule, and authorship has been assigned to Jovita Rapicius.Leaves 489-497 (signature 3q ?) are an addition, containing "De balneis compendium ex Hippocrate et Galeno" by Giovanni Antonio Sicco.Includes alphabetical indexes of authors represented in the collection, and names of baths. Première édition de ce précieux recueil publié par Tomasso Giunta (1494-1566), réunissant les principaux traités touchant les bains et les eaux thermales composés depuis l'Antiquité classique jusqu'à la Renaissance, formant une histoire complète de la balnéologie tant occidentale qu'orientale. L'ouvrage regroupe les textes de plus de 70 auteurs parmi lesquels on retrouve Aristote, Avicenne, Hippocrate, Galien, Seneque, mais aussi Savonarole, Fuchs, Conrad Gessner, Agricola, etc. Il contient la description d'environ 200 lieux de thermalisme et plusieurs des traités présents dans ce recueil ne sont connus que grâce à cette édition. Le traité de Gessner sur les sources thermales de Suisse et d'Allemagne y paraît pour la première fois. L'édition est illustrée de 5 gravures sur bois représentant le plan d'un bain naturel près de Pozzuoli (f. 287), les machines pour les bains de Fideris en Suisse (f. 295), une très grande vue des bains de Plombières en France (f. 299), une carte de la côte Adriatique dans la zone de Trieste (f. 306 v°) et la représentation d'un bain romain (f. 489 v°). Manque la dernière gravure dans notre ouvrage. On trouve également de jolies lettrines historiées. Belle impression sur deux colonnes en lettres rondes de Tommaso et Giovanni Maria Giunta, fils de Lucantonio Giunta.
