The author, who resided in Canada from 1823 to 1834, founded at Montreal the 'Daily Advertiser', the first daily paper published in Canada, to which were connected the 'Courier', a bi-weekly, and the 'Weekly Abstract'. He was later a colonial judge in New Zealand and Australia. " Chapman here examines the early proceedings of the Royal Commission appointed to investigate the grievances in Lower Canada and the events leading up to it. He urges that the "internal affairs [of Upper and Lower Canada] should be handed over to them with a guarantee against future interference." "Let justice then be done to the intelligent people of the two Canadas, and we secure with them a warm and lasting friendship. The danger of a forcible separation lies, not in the impotent threats of the Canadian oligarchies, but in the continuation of a system of misrule, which must in time completely alienate the affections of the people from this the parent state."
