Añadir al carrito4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Palgrave begins: 'My dear Inglis/ | I have had such avalanches [last word underlined] of business - and most of a confidential nature - that I have really been unable to write to you. By confidential business I mean business of a class which I cannot open to mhy clerks - and what must be either copied by my own hands or at home - If it had not been for Fanny Brown in addition to her sister I do not know what I should have done'. He has a 'distant notion' of his 'future plans': going to Albano in August, and staying there until 'Rome becomes tolerably healthy'. He is in 'much perplexity about future residence', findigin it 'so difficult to suit me and your brothers'. He hopes to 'get rather more out of London', and thinks 'Mr Freshfield's house just behind Mr F's may suit'. In the last paragraph Palgrave refers to 'K Hall' and the 'hope that Frank [Palgrave's eldest son, Francis Turner Palgrave (1824-1897), editor of the celebrated 'Golden Treasury'] will fall upon his legs [.] But I can give no help in this matter, however much I could wish.'.

Añadir al carritoThe Earl of Darnley's four letters (all signed 'Darnley') total 27 pp in 12mo; Lady Darnley's eight letters (all signed 'H. Darnley') total 26 pp in 12mo. All items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Darnley's first letter, 16 September 1853 (12mo, 12 pp), is unusually blunt for the period, and revealing on the etiquette of the period. It begins: 'I trust that the change in your mode of addressing me was accidental, and I have therefore not imitated it, and have used one word which you omitted [presumably 'Dear']. I have ascertained by a reference to my pigeonholes that I am not mistaken as to there being a change, and am therefore very anxious to have your assurance that it was not intentional.' The letter has resulted from an argument over the interpretation of an act of parliament, with Darnley accusing Shepherd of being 'the party who declined resisting the appeal made by the Cobham Vestry against the decision of the Magistrates': He reminds Shepherd that he 'copied out the clause verbatim, and distinctly specified the act, chapter, and section, and proceeded to demonstrate by the most simple and intelligible process of induction, that the spirit of the act of Parliament was not as Mr. Hayward interpreted it; and I added that the Lord Chancellor himself wd. never convince me to the contrary. [.] Had I not been writing to one whom I decided to be of a logical mind and a reasonable disposition, I should not have taken so much trouble to argue my case, and I can hardly suppose that you will content yourself with evading the question at issue, having neither impugned my premises nor in anywise disproved my conclusions.' He refers to 'two gentlemen influencing a Vestry to prevent [Darnley] having 130 yards of road widened' 'As I said before, at your house, I was not, at the time of the Vestry meeting, aware that you were the real prosecutor of the Cobham Surveyor [Shearman]; I thought it was all Mr. Barber's doing'. He considers that 'a prosecution apparently so vindictive, the retrospective and penal character of which indicated, - or rather I should say appeared to indicate, - rather a feeling of personal animosity to the Parish of Cobham than a desire to attain any beneficial object.' The other three letters from Darnley total 15 pages in 12mo. Two, from 1855, concern 'rates and valuations' set (illegally, in Darnley's view) by 'Mr. Barber'. The last item is undated; it acknowledges Shepherd's congratulations on the birth of one of the Darnleys' five daughters. None of Lady Darnley's letters is dated; one is in an envelope with a penny lilac stamp postmarked 1889. Shepherd was a noted naturalist, and her letters reflect a shared interest in natural history. Topics include: his gift of 'curious' orchises; 'Macmillan's book', with 'chapters on Trees and Stars', which she has found for Shepherd at Hatchard's; her gift of 'green winged orchises' ('I have found them in meadows in Suffolk in great numbers, & in various shades of colour - we also found Adder's tongue, and what we think to be Haut bois [sic] Strawberry'); his 'beautiful blue pimpernel'; 'Canon Colson's letter', the 'antiquarian part' of which will interest Shepherd, but which she does not want returned ('I don't think it is at all interesting to hear about bones.'); her son Lord Clifton's letter in the 'Field', 'about his golden Orchis and Hoopoe'. In one letter ('Cobham | Wednesday') she lists Shepherd's 'different visits' to the Darnleys: 'The first in 1879 - when you met my Father and we went to some wood expeditions | 1881 was the Yellowley time - | 1882 Miss Lee Warner | 1886 - you me the Hablers here - I should be so glad if you could come here every year as long as we are all alive! - I think a yearly visit is so satisfactory'. The Autograph Card Signed is in an envelope with Gravesend postmark of 1891. She thanks him for the botanical information ('Clifton was puzzled at first'), and is 'wickedly rejoicing' in his 'being beaten by Fusca'. Also present.

Añadir al carritoOn three sides of a vellum bifolium supplied by the London law stationers Witherby & Co. Dimensions of leaf 39 x 26 cm. In good condition, lightly aged and creased. The document is a draft, with several emendations in pencil, including a lengthy addition in the margin of first page, and a shorter one on the second page. Laid out in customary style, within red rules. Docketed on fourth side: 'Dated 15th August 1914 | The Earl of Ducie and Others | to | The Earl of Ducie and Others | Red Cross Garden | Assignment'. With stamp of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, signed by Hugh de Bock Porter. The document is signed by eight individuals: the Earl of Ducie, Lancelot William Bennett, Charles Stewart Loch, Mary Lumsden, Helen Ironside, Janet Johnson, Thomas Slingsby Tanner, Cecil Antony Nussey, with each of the eight signatures accompanied by that of a different witness. Eight wafer seals in red wax, on a length of green ribbon. The document refers back to the original 999-year lease of 1888, with original lessees 'the said Earl of Ducie William Waldegrave Viscount Wolmer M.P. Herbert Bulkey Mackworth Praed Robert Hunter C.B. [i.e. Sir Robert Hunter (1844-1913)] Octavia Hill and the said Helen Ironside and the said Janet Johnson'. The document explains that as Hill and Hunter (both instrumental in the foundation of the National Trust) have since died, 'the Assignors are desirous of vesting the said premises in the assignees'. Red Cross Garden was laid out in 1887 on the site of a burnt down paper factory and a derelict warehouse. With its ornamental pond, a bandstand, a covered play area for children, and colourful mosaics , the garden was the venue for the annual Southwark Flower Show, and other fetes and celebrations. The garden has recently been restored, and is now run by the Bankside Open Spaces Trust.

THE FIRST MODERN SCIENTIFIC SURVEY OF THE PATAPSCO RIVER AND CHESAPEAKE BAY Single sheet (88 x 40 4/8 inches, laid down on linen, trimmed with silk). An exceptionally fine, large and beautiful original manuscript map of the Patapsco River from the City of Baltimore to the mouth of the Charles River in Chesapeake Bay, drawn in black and red ink and colour wash, noting all river outlets, points, and depths, with a long explanatory inscription, and inset of "Loading marks." and "Table of Triangulation". Signed by Sherburne, Brantz and Wirgman. Provenance: Probable gift of Mrs Phillip T. Tyson to the Maryland Academy of Sciences in January of 1878; deposited at the Enoch Pratt Free Library, Baltimore from 1937, with their ink stamp and shelfmarks. A beautiful map of the Patapsco River and part of the Chesapeake Bay, principally to give definitive soundings of the river and the bay, which are meticulously recorded, with a red line indicating the "loading marks and ranges used for ships of heavy draft .". These soundings were made by Sherburne, a surveyor with and a Lieutenant in the US navy from about 1813-1827. The survey was conducted by Lewis Brantz, a local merchant, who had travelled extensively and published a memoir of his travels in the western states of America: "He devoted himself, for a long time, to surveying the Patapsco river, its branches, and part of the Chesapeake Bay; the engraved map of which is now found, by expert seamen, to be the best that has hitherto been prepared" (Carnegie Library Pittsbugh). He was instrumental in achieving the building of Maryland's first lighthouse project, recommending that lighthouses be place at the mouth of the Patapsco River at Bodkin Point, North Point and Sparrows' Point. He was president of the Philadelphia and Baltimore Railroad, which he helped to complete in January of 1838, after which he died suddenly. (Monthly Bulletin of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, volume 22, 1917). [WITH:] SHERBURNE, Jonathan W. (fl. 1813-1827), BRANTZ, Lewis (1766-1838), and WIRGMAN, Charles (1781-1821).
