Merz seized the chance to achieve a synthesis of painting and architecture after a Dresden building owner put forward a proposal. In this work he pits proportion and clarity, geometry and symmetry against the arbitrariness and thoughtlessness of today's building styles.

Preoccupation with architectural theory and practice has been central for the German artist Gerhard Merz (b. 1947) throughout his career. Indeed, he has sought to achieve a synthesis between architecture and painting -- inscribing "And I am also an architect" on a writing-painting from 1992. This book, part of the successful "Work Documents" series on architects and artists, highlights the building in Dresden which Merz was asked to work on -- immediately after he exhibited at the 1997 Venice Biennale.
