Críticas: This concise handbook is written by a single author and aimed at trainees and junior practising anaesthetists. It is designed as an alphabetical guide covering a 'pot pourri' of theoretical and practical anaesthetic problems and emergencies. It is well written and provides a remarkable amount of useful detail for such a small book. Its greatest strength lies in the many invaluable practical tips that are obviously gleaned from the author's personal experience. These are very clearly explained and provide a ready solution for many complex situations. This book assumes a certain amount of basic knowledge and is therefore not ideal for the junior SHO. It is particularly lacking in basic science and is much more of a practical day to day guide than an exam revision tool. It is a useful addition to the armamentarium of the senior SHO/SpR to provide a broad based practical guide. In particular the section on local anaesthesia and the cardiac arrest algorithms are excellent. On the other hand, the ECG section and the obstetric anaesthesia section are somewhat less detailed. Many practising anaesthetists would undoubtedly enjoy reading this book as it provides good discussion points for trainee education. It is small enough to be easily carried in the trainee's briefcase/handbag but too large for a theatre green pocket. It is not comprehensive enough to be the trainee's main anaesthetic text and is not the optimal revision text but will prove to be an excellent adjunct for the interested trainee to use during theatre lists and when on call.
