Hardback. Condición: Good. In the wake of anticolonial struggles and amid the two world wars, twentieth-century Southeast Asia churned with new political, cultural, and intellectual realities. Liberal democracies flourished briefly, only to be discarded for dictatorships and other authoritarian regimes as the disorder and inefficiencies inherent to democracy appeared unequal to postcolonial and Cold War challenges. Uniquely within the region, Laos maintained a stable democracy until 1975, surviving wars, coups, and revolutions. But Lao history during this period has often been flattened, subsumed within the tug-of-war between the global superpowers and their puppets. Forsaken Causes offers a groundbreaking intellectual history of the Royal Lao Government (RLG) from 1945 to 1975. In Ryan Wolfson-Ford's account, the Lao people emerge as not merely pawns of the superpowers but agents in their own right, with the Lao elite wielding particular influence over the nation's trajectory. Their prevailing ideologies-liberal democracy and anticommunism-were not imposed from outside, but rather established by Lao themselves in the fight against French colonialism. These ideologies were rooted in Lao culture, which prized its traditional monarchy, Buddhist faith, French learning, and nationalist conception of a Lao race. Against histories that have dismissed Lao elites as instruments of foreign powers, Wolfson-Ford shows that the RLG charted its own course, guided by complex motivations, rationales, and beliefs. During this time Lao enjoyed unprecedented democratic freedoms, many of which have not been seen since the government fell to communist takeover in 1975. By recentering the Lao in their own history, Wolfson-Ford restores our understanding of this robust but often forgotten liberal democracy, recovers lost voices, and broadens our understanding of postcolonial and Cold War Southeast Asia as a whole.…

In this brilliantly modern novel of love, obsession, and revenge, a professor pieces together the life and mysterious death of a former student--and unearths a shocking revelation about her final days. "A deliciously modern take on the psychological thriller" (Daily Telegraph). On a snowy February morning, the body of twenty-five-year-old journalist Alice Salmon washes up on a riverbank south of London. The sudden, shocking death of this beloved local girl becomes a media sensation, and those who knew her struggle to understand what happened to lively, smart, and savvy Alice Salmon. Was it suicide? A tragic accident? Or.murder? Professor Jeremy Cooke, known around campus as Old Cookie, is an anthropologist nearing the end of his unremarkable academic career. Alice is his former student, and the object of his unhealthy obsession. After her death, he embarks on a final project--a book documenting Alice's life through the digital and paper trails that survive her: her diaries, letters, Facebook posts, Tweets, and text messages. He collects news articles by and about her; he transcribes old voicemails; he interviews her friends, family, and boyfriends. Bit by bit, the real Alice--a complicated and vulnerable young woman--springs fully formed from the pages of Cookie's book.along with a labyrinth of misunderstandings, lies, and secrets that cast suspicion on everyone in her circle--including Jeremy himself.…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 'If you liked The Girl on the Train then I think you'll like this just as much, if not more' Scott Pack ****** Who is Alice Salmon? Student. Journalist. Daughter. Lover of late nights, hater of deadlines. That girl who drowned last year. Gone doesn't mean forgotten. Everyone's life leaves a trace behind. But it's never the whole story. "I will stand up and ask myself who I am. I do that a lot. I'll look in the mirror. Reassure myself, scare myself, like myself, hate myself. My name is Alice Salmon." When Alice Salmon died last year, the ripples from her tragic drowning could be felt in the news, on the internet, and in the hearts of those closest to her. However, the man who knows her best isn't family or a friend. His name is Professor Jeremy Cooke, an academic fixated on piecing together Alice's existence. Cooke knows that faithfully recreating Alice, through her diaries, text messages, and online presence, has become all-consuming. But he does not know how deep his search will take him into this shocking story of love, loss and obsession where everyone - including himself - has something to hide . . . ******** Praise for What She Left: 'What She Left is an extraordinary and bold creation' Laura Wilson, Guardian 'Every month brings another book billed the new Gone Girl, but we think we've found a winner' Marie Claire 'An absorbing, intricate and extremely original novel. Nicci French, author of The Memory Game and Blue Monday 'Strikingly modern' Sunday Times 'Intriguing and successful . a crime thriller from a different angle, Richmond's accomplished debut encourages the reader to become the sleuth . Genuinely chilling' Maxim Jakubowski 'This is how books should be written; full of trust and respect for the reader, allowing you to follow the darker paths and investigate yourself.
