The whereabouts of these manuscripts was unknown to the editor until 1968, when she discovered that they had been sold in 1958 by John Quinn's niece to the Berg Collection of the New York Public Library. With them were 3 bills, here reproduced (but not in the trade edition), made out to ''- Eliot Esq.'' for the period 22 October to 12 November, 1921, by the Albemarle Hotel, Cliftonville, Margate, where the author was working on The Waste Land.On the front pastedown is the nameplate of the legendary librarian Kenneth A. Lohf under whose stewardship the Columbia University Rare Book and Manuscript Library doubled the size of its holdings. He was also a poet, scholar and bibliographer. Also on the front pastedown is the pictorial Sphinx Hill bookplate designed by Richard Shirley Smith.Fine in fine matching buckram slipcase with title label, faintly faded on one side.
