Five flat panels on spines, all ornately edged in gilt and with gilt lettering. Gilt dentelles to outermost board edges. External page edges are age- and soil-darkened. Boards and spine are scuffed and with small stains. Marbled end papers. Bookplate of W. J. Trower on both front paste downs. Text pages are age-toned, faintly foxed and with an occasional smudge but otherwise clean and very legible. Vol I: Front board panel and FFEP is separated from text block. Back spine fold is partially cracked 1 1/2" - 2" at the head and tail. Corners and edge at head of spine is chipped, headband is secure. Previous owner's name on FFEP. Title page is a bit grubby in general. A few random pencilled margin notes. Other than the separated front board panel, text block is secure. Vol II: Upper edge at head of board spine is chipped and split; front corner at head of spine has a 1" vertical crack down the front spine fold. Front corner at tail of spine has a 5/8" partial crack but holding. Gutter crack at verso to FFEP and blank page; previous owner's name/date on upper right corner of this page.
