In 1913, you could have read Mr. Elliott's book, "The Truth About the Railroads", and you might have then been able to understand the position of the railroad companies . or not. It was a complicated situation: what Mr. Elliott called "the so-called Railroad Question". Effecting to p…resent an impartial account (it is implied), the book presents a great deal of information. Howard Elliott (1860 - 1928) was President of Northern Pacific Railway from 1903 to 1913, and President of New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad from 1913 to 1917. So we know what side of the debate he was on. The Chapters:: 1) Coöperation between the railway owner, the railway employer, and the railway user. 2) The Individual, the corporation, and the government 3) The Conservation of Railway service 4) Rate-making and the government 5) The Relation between the farmer and the railroad 6) Agriculture, banking, and the carrier 7) Transportation in New England 8) Public opinion : its effect on business. Picking the book off the shelf of a bookstore, and perusing the first page of text, one might have said "Well now, this looks interesting!" : "INTRODUCTION : The time has now come for an impartial and serious consideration by the people at large, as to whether it might not be better for their interests individually and collectively, and for all business interests of the country, to give the railroads a breathing-spell, to eliminate some of the useless and unnecessary restrictive law under which they are compelled to work, and to permit them to solve the very serious problem of giving the public what it wants in railroad service and railroad facilities, by encouraging friendly relations and friendly discussion with the public, rather than to have constant friction and bickering. For many years, and particularly in the last few, there has been agitation about the so-called railroad question, or problem. Through lack of complete information about the railroads there has risen some antagonism toward them, and it is important to explain the real situation, because the American people, when they know the truth, are not likely to be unjust to any one class of people, or to any one business." DETAILS : Trade Hardcover; contains a frontispiece photo-portrait of the author; has an Introduction; 260 pages, plus two pages of publisher's promotional text for two other titles. 4 7/8" x 7 3/8"; red cloth-covered boards and spine, with gilt lettering on spine and front board. Sans dust-jacket (issued?) CONDITION …VERY GOOD … This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable (an exceptional copy), with the following details noted :: EXTERIOR - Spine is somewhat faded; just perceptible is some slight fading (or weathering) along the board edges (this is hardy worth mentioning); there is a tiny ink speck on the bottom edge of the front board, else the cover is clear of marking. The gilt on the spine is somewhat faded but still displaying adequately; the gilt lettering on the front board id bright. The text-block edges display a sight touch of foxing, else are clean and unmarked. BINDING - Solid. INTERIOR - Original owner's ink signature on front paste-down; a touch of mild foxing on end-papers, else interior is free of marking, being clean and crisp throughout.
