Original sport-themed former owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. A subsequent owner stamp and acquisition date below, inner hinge with older paper reinforcement, end papers with offset from the pastedowns. Pages 125 and 129 repaired, small spill stain upper corner of pages129 to conclusion. Covers protected by mylar. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

TOGETHER WITH: Single page 8 1/8 x 5 1/4 inches noting availability of the book and that an elaborate prospectus is available upon request and accompanying printed order form (both lightly soiled and folded as if for mailing). This group of ephemera is sales material for the book, NOT a copy of the book. Wraps. An elaborate prospectus and associated ephemera for one of Hunter's better books. A nice addition to any Dard Hunter collection. "William Joseph "Dard" Hunter (November 29, 1883 February 20, 1966) was an American authority on printing, paper, and papermaking, especially by hand, using sixteenth century tools and techniques. He is known for, among other things, the production of two hundred copies of his book Old Papermaking, for which he prepared all aspects: Hunter wrote the text, designed and cast the type, did the typesetting, handmade the paper, and printed and bound the book. A display at the Smithsonian Institution that appeared with his work read, "In the entire history of printing, these are the first books to have been made in their entirety by the labors of one man." He also wrote Papermarking by Hand in America (1950), a similar but even larger undertaking. Active in the Arts and Crafts movement, Hunter created and championed many other types of handmade arts and crafts, publishing his own guides, such as Things You Can Make. He experimented with pottery, jewelry, stained glass windows, and furniture. He also founded a correspondence school, the Dard Hunter School of Handicrafts." (Wikipedia).

After the War he participated heavily in the smuggling of European Jews into Palestine, with the establishment of Israel, and had a distinguished military career in the Israeli Army in several conflicts there (1956 War, Israeli War of Independence, The Six-Day War, and the Yom Kippur War). He was also a noted artist, particularly of war imagery. Very scarce. *OCLC* locates four copies over two records (Library of Congress, U.S. Army War College, University of Delaware, and the University of Tel Aviv).

Katharine Lee Bates died on March 28, 1929. Unrecorded by *OCLC*. Katharine Lee Bates (1859-1929), educator and poet, author of 'America the beautiful,' wrote six collections of verse, travel books and juvenile fiction [see Blain et al. 'Feminist Companion to Literature in English,' p. 69]. Earl B. Marlatt (1892-1976) was born in Columbus, Indiana.

Written by Auxcencio Maria Pena, a student from Mexico who was afterward expelled, and recited by him in the college chapel. Copies of the printed poem were said to have been concealed, in 1829, between the ceiling and the wood closet door in the front middle room, fourth story, north entry of old South Middle (later Connecticut Hall), where they were discovered after a fire in Dec. 1890. "Now this year 1950 is highly important as it marks the beginning of a New Era in the world as well as the beginning of tremendous cataclysms which will change the face of the Earth. The Age of Aquarious is dawning: it is the age of the Air, the Age of Brotherhood, the Age in which… we shall see the establishment of the Reign of Love on Earth, some have called it the Golden Age. It is for this reason that this particular disciple undertakes her pilgrimage at this particular time." (p. 4). Christabel Bevan, b. 1901, was a disciple of Sri Aurobindhu, "interested in religion, unmarried, and a vegetarian", and her privately printed journal recounts her unauthorized journey from northern Sikkim to Tibet over the Donkya La pass, by horse, yak, foot, and across rivers on the backs of her guides, to reach Natan, Shigatsi, and along the Brahmaputra river. When she reached Shigatsi, her funds were exhausted, and after sending a cable to Gangtok, the Tibetan authorities became aware that she had entered without permission. She was escorted back to the border of Sikkim. The return over the Donkya La pass "appeared to be harder this side than from Sikkim." A highly eccentric account of Tibet just after Indian independence, and an unusual imprint (Pondicherry was absorbed by India in 1954). Very scarce.
