Añadir al carritoEarly reprint (apparently first published in 1869 but copyright 1868). i-vi, 7-270, 3-8 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 12.75cm. Green cloth lightly mottled; spine slightly cocked; slender cloth losses and some tearing at spine ends; slender wear to bumped board corners; some flaking to spine's otherwise bright gilt stamping. Light blue endpapers; slender paper label with printed name "Col. Richard L. Maury," affixed near top of front pastedown; moisture stains and foxing to interior leaves. Front and rear hinges shaken; a few quires slightly pulled but with stress at quire starts/stops but all still holding. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj and aiding the binding. Book concludes with a six page G.W. Carleton & Co. title list advertising section. Aforementioned label supports the book's past ownership by Commodore Matthew Fontaine Maury's eldest son Richard Launcelot Maury (1840-1907) who served with the Virginia Infantry and Confederate Army throughout the Civil War. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1863, Maury was seriously wounded at Fair Oaks (1862) and again at Drewry's Bluff (1864) and accompanied General Robert E. Lee at the Appomattox surrender. Maury's postbellum career included a stint as Mexican Commissioner of Immigration as well as resuming the practice of law in a partnership with wartime Virginia Governor John Letcher. Book was acquired from a Brandon, Mississippi estate which, upon cursory research, did not have any immediate familial connection to Maury so the circumstance of its presence in the Brandon collection is unknown.

Añadir al carritoFront cover title is HISTORICAL INDIAN STORIES AND LIFE OF THE WHITE CHIEF WE-CHOW-WAUGH-SHEP-ISH-DA-SO-DA OR CHIEF EAGLE EYE whereas page 1 offers an alternative title CHIEF EAGLE EYE'S GRAND COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL INDIAN CURIOS. Collates as [front cover], 1-46, [rfep], [rear cover]. Staple-bound paperback booklet: H 22.75cm x L 15.5cm. Tan paper covers heavily foxed/toned with some staining; curling/creasing to covers' fore-edge corners with interior leaves affected likewise; two-line ink ownership inscription at top of front cover; tearing along spine; square 2.5cm loss to rear cover's bottom right corner. B/w portrait photo of Chief Eagle Eye (aka G.D. Fuerst) on front cover; b/w portrait photo of Princess Neola on rear cover. Foxing to interior leaves with some soiling and staining. Staples well rusted but binding remains firm. Only a good copy but evidently a scarce if not rare publication as OCLC does not locate any copies under either title at any member institutions. Text comprised of separately titled sections initiating with the performers' biographical information followed by varied prose such as "Indian Religion," "Wigwam Wisdom" (supposed Indian adages), "The Cry of the Indian" (a poem), "Indians Signals and Signs," "The Navajo Indians and Their Blanket Weaving," "Indian Pottery," "Indian Basket Work," "Dress of the Indians," etc. This rather sedate and educationally-toned essay assortment curiously lacks the typical hyperbole usually encountered in late 19th-early 20th century ephemera for traveling entertainers but was certainly compiled with an ancillary promotional purpose (probably a press kit). George D. Fuerst (1857-1918), a white actor of German and Scotch descent, performed in various touring wild west shows under his long-term stage persona "Chief Eagle Eye" from at least the mid-1880s into the 1900s with roles as a ringmaster, western gunfighter, and Indian chief. One online source credits Chief Eagle Eye as a trick shot performer with Buffalo Bill's Wild West from 1886 to 1890. In 1888 Fuerst married Neola, a princess of the Winnebago tribe and a trick shot artist as well, and page 7 features a b/w photo of Neola with the couple's two surviving daughters (five other children having passed). No publication date is provided but on page 2 Fuerst claims a forty-five year association with Native Americans, a timeline that presumably commences upon his adoption at age 6 (circa 1863) by a Kansas family of either Kickapoo or Winnebago affiliation which would therefore place the booklet circa 1908. However, page 8 mentions a May 1901 Minneapolis Times article with text on page 11 noting "Colonel Roosevelt" which hints at publication being prior to Theodore Roosevelt's presidential ascension in September 1901.

The seven plays are: Ajax, Electra, the entire Oedipus cycle (Oedipus Rex, Antigone and Oedipus at Colonus), Women of Trachis and Philoctetes.
