From the Publisher: This work reviews both long and short-term meteorological variations related to solar activity and the few physical linking mechanisms that have been suggested to explain the relationships. Several new mechanisms are postulated with varying degrees of completeness to supplement those already reported in the literature. Physical background material is provided where appropriate to assist the reader in grasping the concepts presented. The book also examines some experimental concepts useful for investigating physical links between solar variability and meteorological responses. The rationale for this objective is that, despite the vast literature supporting a probable connection between the two phenomena, there is considerable disbelief for such a connection. This disbelief seems to be based principally on the fact that no plausible physical mechanisms have been identified to explain how the relatively minor fluctuations in solar energy output can influence or drive the vastly more energetic meteorological processes. If linking mechanisms can be identified, the subject of Sun-weather relationships will be on much firmer ground, and improved predictions of climatic trends and weather changes may in fact become possible. From these few introductory remarks it can be appreciated that the subject we address is truly multidisciplinary. It will be seen in subsequent pages that even the present modest effort touches on solar physics, magnetospheric physics, atmospheric physics and chemistry, atmospheric electricity, cosmic rays, geomagnetism, and meteorology. To gain new insights into Sun-weather relationships we believe it is necessary to combine the extant knowledge of all these disciplines and interpret that knowledge in new ways. We do not claim to do that here, but we do attempt to bring together, and in some cases simply point out, the essential ingredients required. In that spirit, the characteristics of solar variables and solar energy sources suggested to be related to weather and climate fluctuations are discussed in chapter 2. Included are galactic cosmic rays and geomagnetic activity, since variations in the intensity of these phenomena are related to solar activity, and both have been observed to be correlated with weather changes.Long-term climatic trends and their association with solar activity are examined in chapter 3. In some cases it has been noted that correlations between meteorological phenomena and the sunspot cycle may persist for several cycles and then break down or even reverse sign. These peculiarities may be indicative of a fortuitous correlation between unrelated variables, or they may point toward an as yet undiscovered key to an undefined link between two seemingly independent variables that are in fact related. Because of these two important possibilities, a separate section (3.3) is devoted to such breakdowns and reversals.Short-term correlations between meteorological parameters and transient solar phenomena, such as solar flares and solar magnetic sector boundaries, are treated in chapter 4. Correlations between weather changes and magnetic activity as an indicator of solar variability are included in this chapter. In chapter 5, the possibility that observed correlations between magnetic activity and weather phenomena are unrelated to solar activity is examined briefly. The heart of the problem, that is, the physical processes and mechanisms that produce the observed correlations, is addressed in chapter 6. Here the discussion must be speculatory and in some cases naive, because no hypotheses have been proven that e.…

Hardcover. Condición: gut. 1997. Global warming may well be a scientific fact but the causes of it are a long way from being known for certain. The idea that the phenomenon is man-made is a scientific opinion - NOT a fact. This book puts forward the most plausible and factual explanation of global warming currently available. There has been so much money been invested in the man-made theory that it will take time for Mr Calders scientific arguments to surface but I believe in 10-20 years time - the cosmic flux will in the end be proved to be the major cause of global warming. I had always assumed that the powers-that-be were working diligently in my best interest, especially when it came to the environment and related science. But as I got closer and closer to these (environmental) high priests of arrogance I became increasingly dismayed and, in some cases, outraged. I have now come to recognize that whenever I cannot correlate the (environmental) policies forced upon the world versus objective, observable, repeatable scientific facts; the only explanation lies in what I call the Evil Triad : Money-Fame-Power. But now here comes Nigel Calder and his magnificant work THE MANIC SUN. Nowhere had I read such a thorough compendium on the truth regarding global climatic change, and its historical origins, not in the burning of hydrocarbon fuels, but in the rampant unbridled power of Sol, our sun. As simple as the statistical tool of correlation, and yet as complex as the process of cloud formation, the true basis of climate change comes alive in Calder's THE MANIC SUN. Nowhere prior to my reading of THE MANIC SUN had I ever imagined that the high-priced, highly promoted computer climate models that were forever chasing the observed atomospheric data and records, and never successfully predicting anything, other than another go at Congressional budget committees, did not bother to include "esoteric entities" such as clouds(? ). And yet that is just what the Greenhouse priesthood has been doing all along. Unlike the march toward the new pagan religion demanded of us by the Greenhouse powers-that-be, Calder offers a lucid, objective, high correlation value explanation of how our sun is the master of our weather, and always has been. Based on the latest solar science and atomospheric observations, THE MANIC SUN should be demarked as the first truly layperson-friendly turning point in the public debate over climate change. Unlike their political control over your minds and votes and wallets, the Greenhouse Industry will be hard-pressed to convince you that any change in your human behavior is going to have a lasting effect on the sun, and therefore they are rife with plans to keep you in the cold (?) about THE MANIC SUN. An example includes how the powers-that-be in the US refuse to allow publication of THE MANIC SUN here. That fact should give you pause. Autor: Nigel Calder has published several books, more than 800 magazine articles in SAIL, Cruising World, Ocean Navigator, Yachting World, etc., and lectures on cruising to sell-out crowds. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - CAWSES (Climate and Weather of the Sun-Earth System) is the most important scientific program of SCOSTEP (Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics). CAWSES has triggered a scientific priority program within the German Research Foundation for a period of 6 years. Approximately 30 scientific institutes and 120 scientists were involved in Germany with strong links to international partners. The priority program focuses on solar influence on climate, atmospheric coupling processes, and space climatology. This book summarizes the most important results from this program covering some important research topics from the Sun to climate. Solar related processes are studied including the evolution of solar radiation with relevance to climate. Results regarding the influence of the Sun on the terrestrial atmosphere from the troposphere to the thermosphere are presented including stratospheric ozone, mesospheric ice clouds, geomagnetic effects, and their relevance to climate. Several chapters highlight the importance of coupling mechanisms within the atmosphere, covering transport mechanisms of photochemically active species, dynamical processes such as gravity waves, tides, and planetary waves, and feedback mechanisms between the thermal and dynamical structure of the atmosphere. Special attention is paid to climate signals in the middle and upper atmosphere and their significance relative to natural variability.…
