Text is clean and free of marks or underlining. 496 pp. Fast shipping in a secure book box mailer with tracking. An enchanting book about books: a beautiful hardcover Pocket Classics anthology of stories that testify to the irresistible power of the written word The characters in the delightful stories collected here range all the way from the ink-stained medieval monks in Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose to the book-besotted denizens of Ali Smith's Public Library and Other Stories. In these pages readers are invited to enter the interior lives of librarians in Lorrie Moore's "Community Life" and Elizabeth McCracken's "Juliet" and are ushered into a host of unusual libraries, including the infinite rooms of Jorge Luis Borges's "The Library of Babel" and a secret library in Helen Oyeyemi's "Books and Roses." Books exert their power in mysterious ways: an attempt by the military leaders of an imaginary nation to censor all of literature goes awry in Italo Calvino's "A General in the Library" and Julio Cortázar's mesmerizing "The Continuity of Parks" dramatizes the merging of the world inside and outside of a book. In Stories of Books and Libraries, a dazzling array of writers including Evelyn Waugh, Colette, Walter Benjamin, Isaac Babel, Teffi, and Ray Bradbury pay tribute to books and the magical places that house them. Everyman's Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. For everyone who loves to read, a joyous bibliofest of stories about books and libraries (with authors, collectors, booksellers and even the odd publisher thrown in for good measure). Here are libraries modest, mobile, mystical (Borges of course) and magical (Helen Oyeyemi's enchanting 'Books and Roses'); public and private, provincial and prestigious. Little that happen in Elizabeth McCracken's eccentric library did not happen in real life - even down to the murder; and it is rumoured that on 3 June 1997 the British Museum Reading Room really was visited by the ghost of Max Beerbohm's obscurest of poets, Enoch Soames.Fiction and reality merge in Cortazar's 'A Continuity of Parks'. Characters step out of their books in Fay Weldon's 'Lily Bart's Hat Shop', while Jasper Fforde's Jurisfiction operatives enter Wuthering Heights to deliver a Rage-Counselling session. Charles Lamb muses on the annoying book-borrowing habits of Samuel Taylor Coleridge; the teenage Teffi is overawed by Tolstoy; Helene Hanff in Manhattan launches her famous correspondence with a London antiquarian bookshop at 84 Charing Cross Road.Reading, as the Queen informs an appalled private secretary, is 'untidy, discursive and perpetually inviting'. And also, of course, a lot of fun. Sit comfortably, then, and begin. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. James Branch Cabell (1879 - 1958) was a highly regarded American writer of fantasies. He was admired by such renowned authors as Mark Twain, H. L. Mencken, Edmund Wilson, Ellen Glasgow, Theodore Dreiser, and Sinclair Lewis. He was influential on many subsequent authors of the fantastic, such as Robert Heinlein (who described his own novel, "Stranger in a Strange Land" as "a Cabellesque satire"), James Blish, Charles G. Finney, Clark Ashton Smith, and Jack Vance. Indeed, in more recent times, fantasy author Neil Gaiman said that Cabell was a major influence. In the book here offered, "Chivalry", originally published in 1909, the stories are set in a far distant past time when proud kings, haughty queens, and errant 'knights in shining armor' bestrode the earth. Many of the characters are historical persons. These are no simple tales, and the language demands the reader's close attention, Indeed, in my own opinion, Cabell, in these stories, seems to outdo William Morris in fanciful romance. Cabell (rhymes with rabble) is considered by many to be a major cult author - and quite collectable. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. This copy of "Roads to Glory" by Richard Aldington (1892 - 1962), is a reprint issued by Books for Libraries Press as part of their 'Short Story Index Reprint Series'. The book is now Out of Print (OP). Richard Aldington was one of the main Imagist poets, and a novelist, biographer and literary critic. Married to Hilda Doolittle (HD) he was, for the greater part of his life at the center of English literature. He had many friends and associates among the noted literary elites of the day, including T. S. Eliot, D. H. Lawrence, Ezra Pound, W. B. Yeats, Lawrence Durrell, C. P. Snow, ? and of course Hilda Doolittle, whose poetry he championed. His influence on things literary was notable. In 1946 he was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Aldington fought in the First World War (WWI), was exposed to gas during the war, which experience - indeed the entire, stupendous imbroglio that marked that war - made a huge impact on him. The book here offered is a collection of stories and sketches that was originally issued in 1930. The stories, which were often flavored by his own experiences, are : ** Meditation on a German Grave ** Victory ** At All Costs ** Deserter ** Of Unsound Mind ** Killed in Action ** A Bundle of Letters **Booby Trap **Sacrifice Post ** The Lads of the Village ** Love for Love ** The Case of Lieutenant Hall ** Farewell to Memories. It's an excellent grouping of stories - quite satisfying. For an interesting read, and a greater understanding of Aldington, I suggest one read the Wikipedia article on him.
