Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book is a captivating blend of historical research and cultural anthropology that chronicles the advent of Catholicism in the American Southwest, beginning with the arrival of Spanish missionaries in the mid-16th century. The author draws on primary sources, such as letters, diaries, and official documents, to recount the heroic efforts of Franciscan and Jesuit missionaries as they spread the Catholic faith among the indigenous tribes of the region. The book highlights the challenges these missionaries faced in navigating the political and social complexities of the time, while striving to protect the native peoples from the harsh treatment often inflicted by Spanish colonists. It also examines the lasting legacy of the missionaries' work, evident in the vibrant Catholic traditions that continue to thrive in the southwestern United States today. This book offers a unique and illuminating perspective on the complex and often overlooked history of Catholicism in the American Southwest, making it a valuable addition to any collection on religious history or the history of the American West. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
