Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. PEARCE, EARNEST H. (1865-1930) Bp. of Worcester. Sion College and Library. Cambridge : University Press, 1913. 8vo. First edition. 384 pp. Original publisher's blue cloth covers. Clean and solid apart from a smudge of white paint on the front cover (see image). Clear gilt title on spine with a gilt design on the front. Contents clean, crips and unmarked. 4 b/w plates and a very appropriate Sion College gift label inside front cover. Sion College, in London was an institution founded by Royal Charter in 1630 as a college, guild of parochial clergy and almshouse, under the 1623 will of Thomas White, vicar of St Dunstan's in the West. The clergy who benefitted by the foundation were the incumbents of the City parishes, of parishes which adjoined the city bounds when the college was founded, and of parishes subsequently formed out of these. During the Civil War the library expanded, not least because it housed the Library of St. Paul's Cathedral from 1647 (there were even plans for it to buy Abp. Ussher's library). Its first printed catalogue was published in 1650. Around one-third of the books were destroyed by the Great Fire of London in 1666. In 1886 Sion College was moved to new buildings on the Victoria Embankment, and became principally known for its theological library which served as a lending library to members of the college, and was accessible to the public. A governing body appointed by the members to administer the foundation includes a president, two deans and four assistants. Past presidents included William Gouge, D.D., Edmund Calamy, Edward Reynolds and Samuel Bolton. In 1996, the college disposed of its large Victorian premises on the banks of the River Thames. Its Library was closed June 1996, with the manuscripts, pamphlets, and pre-1850 printed books going to Lambeth Palace Library. Earnest Pearce was an Anglican bishop, the 106th Bishop of Worcester from 1919 until his death and who wrote this very informative library history.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book traces the 400-year history of Sion College and Library, a London institution founded by the will of Thomas White in 1624. Originally founded to provide lodging and support to London's impoverished elderly and clergy, the organization expanded its focus over time to include an extensive library that would serve the intellectual and spiritual needs of London's clergy and its community. Set against the backdrop of London's rich history, from its growth and development to tragic events such as the Great Fire of London, the book not only chronicles the College's journey but also reveals the significant and often overlooked presence of the clergy in the life of the city. The author deftly interweaves the personal stories of the College's key figures with the broader history of the institution, providing a rich and nuanced account of a remarkable organization and its contributions to religious life, education, and the literary and intellectual landscape of London. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
