Sub-title to A Show at Shocards is "Comprehensive, Complete, Concise" and the introduction describes its intent as presenting "all that can be desired in the way of practical method execution and design, relative to the art as applied and practiced in every-day work in show card… shops or studios and department stores." Then, in text and illustration the book sets out as a primary source of information on this art form. The first 47 pages are devoted to text material which includes examples of type variations, colour combinations and equipment. Other illustrations in this section include heraldic style devices, 16 pages of type faces plus one pagr of additional designs. Then follows the illustrated sectioncontaining 121 figures showing card examples and base designs, these are followed by five unpaginated pages with further design/type examples. This interesting publication represents showcard technology in the early 1900s, well before the age of computer generation of this art form. No publication date is given, the copyright note states 1918, 1913 and 1912 but there is no indication that the book was published prior to 1918. Book paginated only tp page 47, figures 1 to 103 are each one sided only with the reverse blank, 104 to 121 are double printed with multiple illustrations, text block is 2cm thick exclusive of covers. Dark green hard covers VG with coloured design/decoration at front, yellow titles to spine, light wear at corners and spine extremities, text block is generally excellent with four early pages (one sheet) loose, appearing to have missed sewing during production --- these preceed Figure 1, The lower corner margin of the final figure (No 121) is missing with no intrusion to the illustrations. Internally the book is bright and clean, there are no inscriptions. Unpacked weight 1.2 kgs; additional shipping may be required for offshore despatch. Frank H. Atkinson was a sign painter from the ART NOUVEAU era, who lived in Chicago and worked mostly for Cadillac. His books influenced hand lettering and sign painting for many years.
