Sophia Rosamond Praeger (1867-1954) was a sculptor and illustrator, born and eventually settled in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. She attended the School of Art in Belfast under George Trobridge and Slade School of Fine Art under Alphonse Legros, winning a silver medal for drawing. She illustrated a series of children's books to help make a living, some written by her. Her most famous sculpture, The Philosopher, made her name when shown at RA in 1920. Praeger was an honorary member of RHA and a member and president of RUA. Also exhibited at Belfast Art Society and at Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. (from Art UK).…

Neat inscription on verso front endpaper, occasional slight faint foxing, otherwise clean, 1 japan fold opened. A very good copy. First published undated in 1903 with imprint London, Glasgow and Dublin. Blackie dropped Dublin from the imprint after 1910. The first edition was in the same format except that the title was printed on the spine and the little girl on the upper cover had a red coat and hat.
