Erstpressung. Der Komponist, Musikwissenschaftler und -soziologe (1905-1988) war einer der wichtigsten Vertreter des Sozialistischen Realismus in der Musik der DDR. Er schrieb drei Sinfonien u.a. Orchesterwerke, eine Oper, Kammermusiken, Lieder und ein Oratorium. Seine musiktheoratischen Arbeiten galten als wesentliche Beiträge marxistischer Geschichtsschreibung. Er studierte u.a. bei Paul Hindemith und war mit Hanns Eisler befreundet. Als Kommunist blieb er 1933 nach der Teilnahme an einer musikwissenschaftlichen Tagung in Cambridge in Großbritannien im Exil. 1948 in die sowjetische Besatzungszone zurückgekehrt übernahm er an der Berliner Humboldt-Universität den neugeschaffenen Lehrstuhl für Musiksoziologie. Daneben war er Vorsitzender des Verbandes der Komponisten und Musikwissenschaftler, Mitbegründer der Händel-Festspiele und Vorsitzender der Händel-Gesellschaft in Halle.
