Collects Roe's "Autobiography" and three stories, "The Queen of Spades," "A Ghost on Christmas Eve" and "Taken Alive." Number 112 of "Warne's Star Series." Roe, a clergyman who served as a Union chaplain during the Civil War, took up writing full-time after his novel BARRIERS BURNED AWAY, based on the 1871 Chicago fire, became a bestseller. His attention to moral purpose made popular fiction more palatable to a nation habitually suspicious of it as frivolous if not downright immoral. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - ''Queen of Spades'' is a novel written by E. P. Roe, first published in 1877. The story is set in New York City and follows the life of a young woman named Alice Endicott. Alice is a beautiful and wealthy heiress who is pursued by many suitors, including the dashing and charming Captain Hector Colesworth. However, Alice is not interested in any of them and instead becomes fascinated by a mysterious and enigmatic man known only as the ''Queen of Spades.'' As Alice's obsession with the Queen of Spades grows, she becomes increasingly isolated from her family and friends. Her father, a wealthy businessman, is concerned about her behavior and hires a detective to investigate the Queen of Spades' true identity. Meanwhile, Alice's cousin, Edith, is also in love with Captain Colesworth and is determined to win his affections. The novel explores themes of love, obsession, and the dangers of gambling. It also delves into the societal expectations placed on women during the 19th century, particularly regarding marriage and social status. ''Queen of Spades'' is a gripping tale of romance, intrigue, and betrayal that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.''Queen it, did you say '' cried Sue, in great spirits. ''Well, then, I shall be queen of spades. Get 'em, and come with me. Bring a pickaxe, too.'' She led the way to a point not far from the dwelling, and resumed: ''A hole here, father, a hole there, Hiram, big enough for a small hemlock, and holes all along the northeast side of the house. Then lots more holes, all over the lawn, for oaks, maples, dogwood, and all sorts to pretty trees, especially evergreens.'This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
