David Ramsay Hay was a Scottish artist, interior decorator and colour theorist. He decorated Abbotsford for Sir Walter Scott and Holyroodhouse for Queen Victoria. He wrote a number of works on colour harmony and beauty.

Born in Edinburgh, David Ramsay Hay (17981866) exhibited an early talent for drawing. His mother, Rebecca Carmichael, was a noted poet and friend of Robert Burns, but her husband's early death left the family penniless. Her brother, David Ramsay, a banker and proprietor of the Edinburgh Evening Courant, assumed responsibility for the education of his young namesake, who worked for a time as a "reading boy" in his uncle's printing office. At fourteen, he was apprenticed to Gavin Beugo, a heraldic and decorative painter in Edinburgh. It was then that Hay met his fellow apprentice and lifelong friend, painter David Roberts, to whom The Principles of Beauty in Colouring Systematized is dedicated. As partner in a successful interior decorating firm in Edinburgh, Hay was commissioned to help decorate Abbotsford for Sir Walter Scott and Holyrood Palace for Queen Victoria as well as both the National Gallery of Scotland and the hall of theSociety of Arts, London. By the early 1840s, he had been appointed "decorative painter toHer Majesty, Edinburgh." "From the outset,Haytook an interest in the theoretical side of his work and in 1828 published a slim volume, theLaws of Harmonious Colouring. The work ran to six editions in nineteen years, each edition increasing in scope, and was essentially rewritten after the fourth edition.Heartened by his success,Haygained confidence in his theoretical positions and proceeded to produce a series of involved works during the 1840smostly published in expensive editions byWilliam Blackwood & Sonson subjects including the harmony of form, the principles of colouring, and the role of symmetry and proportion in defining beauty.Picking up on[George] Field'sideas of quantitative analogies between music and colour,Haydeveloped this principle into a complex system of so-called 'harmonic ratios' which supposedly permeated all forms of natural and manmade beauty and which he expounded in great detail in hisPrinciples of Beauty in Colouring Systematized(1845). Most ofHay'sworks were illustrated from his own designs. Although most of his ideas are completely discredited today and dismissed as pseudo-science,Hay'sinfluence in his own time was extensive" - DNB.
