Añadir al carritoFirst Edition viii, 174 pp. Octavo. Leather binding. Gilt lettering and lines of the spine. Edges trimmed. This book has heavy foxing and some light staining throughout; textblock is tight. Illustrated with many tables, charts, and plates. One fold out conical section at title page. Errata slip inset after last Table on back free endpaper. A former owner's bookplate has been removed from the front paste down. A scarce book in very good condition. The author of this book was Matthew Maury, a renowned U.S. Navy officer. He was an accomplished navigator and scientist. He was also fervently committed to White Supremacy, joining the Confederacy to defend the Confederate coast line during the American Civil War. Among other things, he experimented with electrically detonated torpedoes (the Confederate ships using this deadly invention sank fifty five Union ships). Written years before his participation in the Civil War, this American title has detailed chapters on algebra, geometry, logarithms, trigonometry, spherics and nautical astronomy. A very scarce title. This book belonged to Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. David was a prominent hydrographic specialist who served with the Hakluyt Society and the Society for Nautical Research. David's bookplate is on the front free end paper.
