Bel exemplaire, agréablement relié.Une première traduction de la Bible dans le cadre du judaïsme français paraît entre 1831 et 1839. Elle est l'uvre de Samuel Cahen ( 1796-1862 ), directeur de l'école d…u Consistoire juif à Paris. Si cette traduction ne manque ni de saveur, ni de vigueur, son style n'est pas toujours très élégant, elle porte la trace d'une influence de l'allemand. Assez critique sur le travail de Cahen, Lazare Wogue ( 1817-1897 ), grand spécialiste de la Bible hébraïque, publie une traduction du Pentateuque entre 1860 et 1869. Il faut attendre la fin du siècle pour que le Grand Rabbin Zadok Kahn se soucie de produire « une Bible française vraiment populaire, d'un format commode, d'un prix modique et agréable à lire ». Avec plusieurs membres du rabbinat français, il entreprend donc une nouvelle traduction, sans prétentions scientifique, mais avec le souci de reproduire aussi fidèlement que possible le texte original reçu de la tradition juive.
