Published by Dover in 1955, this is not a book for the faint-hearted. It concerns itself with the sort of mathematics that governs heat flow, wave motion, electromagnetism and other phenomena that keep physicists employed and ordinary people quietly grateful that somebody else understands them. While most of us are content to know that a bridge remains standing or that electricity arrives when required, Webster was rather more interested in the equations that explain why. The title itself has a wonderfully uncompromising quality. There are no promises of easy learning, no claims of becoming a mathematical genius in ten simple steps, and certainly no colourful diagrams of smiling students. Instead, it simply announces Partial Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics and leaves the reader to decide whether they are sufficiently brave to proceed. Arthur Gordon Webster was a distinguished physicist and mathematician, and the text reflects a period when scientific books expected their readers to arrive already armed with considerable intelligence, determination and perhaps a pot of strong coffee.
