Pynchon's book is now considered to be the first book to be banned in North America following the public burning of the copies that arrived from England in October 1650…. Dated April 17, 1651, with William Pynchon's signature and seal at the base, and almost certainly in the hand of William's son, John Pynchon. The present document predates Pynchon's scheduled court appearance in Boston on May 7 by three weeks, indicating that Pynchon likely had planned to leave New England even before he was publicly rebuked by the Massachusetts court. Such a precaution would indicate that he was afraid enough of the court's potential actions that he deeded substantial portions of his property prior to his departure for Boston, aware that in such a case his property - or even his life - might have been forfeit. As such, it adds a highly personal dimension to one the first great publishing controversies in Colonial American history, summarized in Literature Suppressed on Religious Grounds, pp. 201-203. Single sheet, recto only. 11.75" x 7.5", The paper has been expertly silked to the reverse, and there is slight loss to along the right margin, with one of the lines of text being mostly illegible along the fold. William Pynchon, an ally of John Winthrop and original patentee of the Massachusetts Bay Company, is considered to be the founder of the city of Springfield, Massachusetts, along with English settlement on the upper Connecticut River in both Massachusetts and Connecticut. The publication of "The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption" compelled him to leave New England, leaving his son, John Pynchon, in charge of his affairs. Manuscript material by William Pynchon is exceptionally scarce on the market, with only a single other document besides this present in commercial records. Signed by Author(s).
