Large wooden backlit display cabinet (18.5 x 9.5 in. at base, x 14.5 in. tall), with front-facing backlit window (16.5 x 9.5 in.), mid-century modern design with blonde finish, with top-doored well behind, housing 27 thick plastic overlays (16 x 10 in.) each displaying different exterior paint choices, which insert down underneath the front glass, 1 large printed chart mounted on thick card stock for colour and upholstery combinations for the different models; 1 vol. Upholstery sample catalogue mounted mounted with 6-rings inside drawer: 8 leaves, w/ 66 samples, include vinyl upholstery, faux leather, and synthetic cloth interiors in range of colours (minor dustsoiling to printed covers). Although some wear and minor scuffing to the case, very minor damage to couple corners, still a remarkable advertising display piece. An amazing mid-century-modern dealer's showroom backlit counter display cabinet for the 1959 Plymouth passenger cars. These high-tech lighted displays were developed by Chrysler, and other automobile manufacturers sales offices as an update of their large showroom sales flip board displays used mostly in the 1950s. Harris Associates was a division of Plastikorp at the time, and were known for their modern and sleek merchandising displays, even patenting one for carpet stores which used plastic, and plastic transparencies, along with sample books. Potential Plymouth customers could come into the dealership, and try out various colour combinations for trim, by overlaying the transparencies and see lit up exactly how their car would appear. The "Forward Look" automobile designs with large wild fins by Virgil Exner in 1959 featured an anodized aluminum egg-crate grille with wrap-around parking/turn signal lights, split by a black screen in the center, along with fins which rose at the C pillar capped by a fluted stainless trim which cascaded down the fins to the deck lid. The Plymouth models were revamped for 1959 by dropping the Plaza series and replacing it with three body styles of the Savoy, including a 4-door, 2-door, and business coupe, alongside the Belvedere in 6 different versions. This was also the year that Plymouth introduced the Sport Fury, featuring a V-800 with Super Pak, special trim, and a fake spare tire cover bolted to the deck lid. The Sport Fury also featured a 260 horsepower 318 with high-performance carburetor, high-performance camshaft, intake manifold, and distributor. Interiors featured "Jet-Age Control Center" instrument clusters featuring an aircraft-style housing, and enough buttons to please any enthusiast -- all of which are displayed here in the lighted case. The colour combinations illustrate Jet Black, Powder Blue, Starlight Blue, Mint Green, Emerald Green, Pearl and Silver Gray, Flame Red, Palomino Beige, Gold, Daffodil Yellow, and others. In addition, there are a number of samples showing the possible convertible top materials. As dealers typically threw away, or disposed of the previous years showroom material, dealer showroom materials are quite scarce, and we can find no records of any similar surviving Plymouth dealer display cabinet.…
