Appositi capitoli sono fra l'altro riservati alla scoperta dell'oro in California, alle miniere di quarzo, alle miniere argentifere del Nevada, alla monetazione aurea ed argentea, all'oro e all'argento nella storia e nelle arti, al ruolo dei metalli preziosi nella civiltà. Il Simonin (Marsiglia, 1830-Parigi, 1886) fu geologo, viaggiatore e scrittore di libri scientifici di ottima divulgazione. Professore di geologia all'École centrale d'Architecture, effettuò ricerche in Italia, in California, in Sud America, nel Madagascar, alle isole Mauritius. Insignito della Legion d'Onore nel 1879, lasciò numerose opere, una delle quali, Les mines et les mineurs (1867), fu una delle fonti scientifiche di Germinal di Zola, mentre un'altra, La Vie souterraine, fu fontale per alcuni libri di Jules Verne.
