VOLUME I (i.e. Volume 26 in the Boy's and Girl's Library series): i-xii, 13-211, [1], 1-4 pages; cloth frayed at spine head with heel nicked, corners bumped and worn, mild rubbing to boards, gilt stamping on spine remains quite bright, antiquarian ownership signature on half-title page, top corners of two leaves creased from past fold-downs, four page publisher's catalogue at rear; very good condition. VOLUME II (i.e. Volume 27 in the series): i-viii, 9-210, [1-6] pages; some loss of cloth and fraying at spine ends with several narrow vertical chips along joints, possible repair to spine for it appears that cloth section may be re-glued to the backstrip, gilt stamping on spine remains has a few spots of rubbing with heel lettering slight duller in comparison to Volume I but still bright overall, a few light stains and rubbing to boards, corners well bumped and worn; antiquarian ownership signature on title page (same name as in Volume I), top corner of one leaf creased from past fold-down, six page publisher's catalogue at rear, missing rear flyleaf and rear free endpaper otherwise good+. Authored under the pseudonym of Uncle Philip, this set was part of a children's series written by Dr. Francis Lister Hawkes (1798-1866), a prolific Episcopal minister, who also authored several titles under the name of Lambert Lilly. At least eight other "Uncle Philip" books were published on the subjects of New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, New Hampshire, trees of America, lost colonies of Greenland, tools and trades among inferior animals, and evidences of Christianity. All are uncommon to scarce classics of 19th century American juvenile literature with their text similarly patterned upon stories told by Uncle Philip with interjections by an inquisitive nephew.
