Paperback. Condición: Good. Four plays from the beloved comedian whose "comic wit has never been sharper." (USA Today) Steve Martin is one of America's most treasured actors, having appeared in some of the most popular moves of our time. He is also an accomplished screenwriter who has in the past few years turned his hand to writing plays. The results, collected here, hilariously explore serious questions of love, happiness and the meaning of life; they are rich with equal parts of pain and slapstick humour, torment and wit. Picasso at the Lapin Agile, Steve Martin's first full-length play, opened at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theater before moving on to Los Angeles (where it was the longest-running show in the history of the Westwood Playhouse) and, finally, to New York. An imagined meeting of Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein in 1904--when both men were in their twenties--it is a compelling examination of science and art and their impact on a rapidly changing society. As the two men engage in a battle of ideas about probability, lust, artistic integrity, and the future, the play moves with ease between the breezy and the profound. Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Other Plays also contains three one-acts, first presented together at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York. WASP depicts an archetypal middle-class white Anglo-Saxon Protestant family trying to live up to the routine of an idealized fifties suburbia. It is a dark and surreal comedy--a broad satire punctuated with insightful and poetic moments of irony. A meditation on the nature of love and loneliness, The Zig-Zag Woman concerns a woman so desperate to find affection that, with the help of a magic trick, she appears to divide her body into three parts. In the final play, Patter for the Falling Lady, a magician plans to levitate his assistant in order to give her what he could not give her when they were together: freedom.…

Hardback. Condición: Fair. A hilarious guide to the care and feeding of cryptozoological and mythological creatures, from the relatively benign phoenix to the terrifying Loch Ness Monster. This is a humorous book which starts from the premise that there are many benefits to owning a pet, but acknowledges that not everyone is content with conventional animals such as cats and dogs. In fact, the very adventurous pet owner might prefer a pet that is so exotic that it technically doesn't exist. This book suggests, therefore, that the reader may want to opt for a crypto-zoological or mythological creature. The main problem with owning such an animal is knowing how to look after it. A brief glance through the local paper will reveal a startling lack of adverts offering baby bigfoots free to a good home, and there is little in the way of obedience classes for werewolves. What, you may ask, does one feed a baby Mongolian Death Worm? Is the giant squid a good choice of pet if you live in a penthouse flat? This book gives a description of each animal, together with an assessment of its suitability for domestication, along with hints and tips on how to obtain and care for your chosen animal. Arranged in terms of dangerousness of animal, it is designed to be dipped into, so that the reader may quickly locate useful information such as how to remove the budgie from the jaws of a newly introduced pet sea monster, should the need arise. Armed with the information in this book, you'll be ready to embark on the rewarding endeavour of owning your very own phoenix, dragon or bogeyman. Cook, Scott (ilustrador).…

Hardback. Condición: Good. In 1961, Tommy Ivo had the world in the palm of his hand. At 25, he was not only a star of television and screen, but a successful touring drag racer as well. Then his producers told him he had to quit racing. Ivo quit Hollywood instead. Here is the story of TV Tommy's incredible life and racing career, related by Ivo to award-winning automotive journalist Tom Cotter and profusely illustrated with images from Ivo's own archives. Follow the former child star as he evolves from teenage hot rodder to the world's most ambitious drag racer, building his own cars in the garage behind his Burbank home and barnstorming the nation. In addition to profiling Ivo's 31 iconic cars--including his trendsetting '23 T-bucket, his mind-bending twin- and four-engine dragsters, and the Funny Cars in which he took his leave from the racing stage--Cotter relates how Ivo, ever the showman, pioneered the techniques that today's race promoters take for granted. Throughout, the tales behind Ivo's career and cars are generously complemented with commentary from such racing luminaries as Don Garlits, Don Prudhomme, and Shirley Muldowney. Tommy Ivo's impact on the sport cannot be understated. Here, finally, is the definitive biography of one of drag racing's most irrepressible characters. Catrow, David (ilustrador).…

Hardback. Condición: Good. This book seeks to bridge a gap in the historiography of Spain and Great Britain by arguing that while the eighteenth century witnessed periods of tension, conflict and hostility between the two powers, their relationship remained multifaceted and significant in other spheres.Throughout the eighteenth century, Spain and Great Britain passed through phases of open warfare, armed peace and deep suspicion. The British capture of Gibraltar and Menorca dealt a severe blow to the newly established Bourbon dynasty in Spain. Even in times of war, however, not all communication channels were closed, with numerous formal and informal contacts being made despite the volatile political climate and enmities. The contributors of this book go beyond the well-known animosity and conflicts to explore the spectrum of interactions, encompassing cultural exchange, traditional diplomacy, trade and espionage plus a multitude of other facets. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and students interested in the complex relations between Great Britain and Spain during the eighteenth century, as well as for a broader audience of historians and both undergraduate and postgraduate students of history and international relations. Catrow, David (ilustrador).…
