First edition, the presumed dedication copy to Thomas Parker (1666-1732), the first Earl of Macclesfield, with the Macclesfield library bookplate to the front pastedown (south library), blindstamp to the frontispiece and title page, pencilled shelf marks to the initial blank, and shelf labels to spine; subsequently sold as part of the celebrated sales of the Macclesfield library (Sotheby's, Macclesfield sale part VIII, 25 October 2006, lot 2527). These essays were the final published work of Whitelock Bulstrode (1650-1724), Whig advocate, sometime commissioner of the excise, and religious writer. Bulstrode's dedication to the first Earl commends him as a lover and master of polite learning, and begs him to accept the dedication even though no learning can be new to him. The Earl, then Lord High Chancellor, would have a rapid fall from grace soon after, being impeached and imprisoned in the Tower of London the following year for bribery. The Macclesfield library which the Earl founded ranked as one of the finest country house libraries in Britain, with both the first and second earls acquiring books from a vast range of subjects, and often dressing them in fine bindings. The books were still in a remarkably fresh state of preservation, as here, when the library was eventually dispersed in the early years of the 21st century. ESTC T137143. Octavo (196 x 121 mm). Complete with terminal advertisement leaf. Short superficial splits at foot of joints, very light rubbing around joints and extremities, a few exceedingly faint stains to front cover, rear endpapers adhered together, but the binding still in excellent condition with very little wear; the contents clean, crisp, and fresh.
