Gieseking reist nach Munchen, um frische Eindrucke zu sammeln. Am Ende entdeckt er eine neue Fahigkeit: Er kann plotzlich Klavier spielen, und zwar Beethovens Klaviersonate Opus 53. Dies fuhrt ihn zuruck nach Waldstein, wo er die Natur und die burgerliche Zweisamkeit wiederentdeckt. In einem kraftvollen Monolog thematisiert Gieseking grosse Fragen wie Liebe, Freundschaft, das Alterwerden und die Kluft zwischen Klassik und Pop. Der Erzahler entfaltet mit beeindruckender Intensitat Variationen seines Lebensentwurfs, die zu einem bedeutenden literarischen Werk fuhren - zart, kraftvoll und fesselnd.
