Styple, this book prints the interviews that the illustrator and sculptor James Edward Kelly (1855-1933) held with more than forty Union generals while they sat for him for portraits and bronzes. The interviews took place between 1878 and 1905. Styple transcribed them from Kelly's notebooks, which are held at the New-York Historical Society. The subjects include Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Hancock, Hooker, Pleasonton, Webb and Joshua Chamberlain, along with many lesser-known commanders. They talk about engagements such as Fort Sumter, Antietam, Gettysburg and Appomattox, and some of their accounts differ from their published memoirs. Kelly also wrote down each man's appearance, manner and character, and the book includes his sketches of the generals. It also gives an account of Kelly's own life.
