Factor of safetyis a term describing the structural capacity of a system beyond theapplied loads or actual loads. Essentially, how much stronger the systemis than it needs to be for a given load. Safety factors are oftencalculated using detailed analysis because comprehensive testing isimpractical on many projects, such as bridges and buildings, but thestructure's ability to carry load must be determined to a reasonableaccuracy. Many systems are purposefully built much stronger than neededfor normal usage to allow for emergency situations, unexpected loadsmisuse, or attrition. There are several ways to compare the factor ofsafety for structures. All the different calculations fundamentallymeasure the same thing, how much extra load beyond what is intended astructure will actually take (or be required to withstand). Thedifference between the methods is the way in which the values arecalculated and compared. Safety factor values can be thought of as astandardized way for comparing strength and reliability between systems.
