Early nineteenth century American signed binding. VOLUME III ONLY of a five volume set. i-viii, 1-350 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12cm. Mid-nineteenth century half leather binding; spine leather darkened but decorated with five raised bands delineating six compartments; spine's dark brown title label and green volume# label retain bright gilt lettering; shallow wear/scuffing at spine ends; marbled paper over boards with scuffed leather corners. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers; large mid-20th century geometric personal bookplate of Little Rock, Arkansas collector Warren Baldwin on front pastedown with early 19th century small circular purple ticket "Bound by Akerman, Providence." discreetly affixed at top left (likely Providence, Rhode Island bookbinder and bookseller Charles Akerman, 1812-1879; ticket's style and type is very much in the style of early 1800s British binders; binding itself reflects work typically seen in Edinburgh and London shops rather then contemporary American efforts so perhaps there is some possibility that the Akerman ticket should be in his role as a bookseller than bookbinder; Brown University's archival collections indicates that Akerman took on an apprentice in 1854 so obviously he was already well established but clearly was too young to be binding books in 1822 when this specific volume was published). Warren Baldwin ink stamp dated "190-" at top of page 1; a few pencil markings amongst text with some foxing and scattered small stains. Binding is firm.

CERVANTES SAAVEDRA, Miguel de Ilustrador. First English edition of the unauthorized fifth book of Don Quixote, by the author of the unauthorized second book. Translation is attributed to Brigg Fountine. Presentation copy from the translator on title-page of volume one which reads "From the translator to Mrs Esdaile by Brigg Fountaine Esqr". Three twelvemo volumes (7 x 4 inches; 177 x 101 mm). [2], 4, xliv, 219, 300-340; [2], 4, 286; [2], 4, 233, [1, blank]pp. We could find no other copies of this at auction. Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked with most of original spines. Boards tooled in gilt. Spines stamped in gilt and lettered in blind. Board edges tooled in blind. Top edges dyed brown, others speckled red. With some rubbing to boards and corners. Some occasional light foxing. Previous owner Edmund Esdaile, decedent of the recipient of the inscription's modern ink signature and notes to front free endpaper of each volume. Overall a very good set. "Brigg Fountaine, Esq., who died in 1825, in his 82nd year, was well learned in the ancient and modern languages, and passionately fond of music. In 1805 he published a translation of Don Quixote." (Genuki Norfolk). "Don Quixote was first printed in Madrid in 1605. It was an immediate successâ "the first edition quickly sold out, and new ones were printed both in Spain and throughout Europe. When Cervantes wrote the 1605 Don Quixote, it was not at all clear that it would be the first of a two-volume set. At the end of the frame story- a pseudo-historical, metafictional narrative of how this 'true' tale came to light- a scholar has uncovered documents concerning Quixote's continued adventures and hopes to eventually publish them. However, Cervantes's final words are forse altro cantera con miglior plettro, or, 'perhaps someone else will sing with a better plectrum [pick for a musical instrument]." This could be interpreted as an invitation for another author to continue Quixote's story. Nine years later, someone did: Segundo Tomo del Ingenioso Hidalgo Don Quixote de la Mancha was released in 1614, authored by an Alonso Fernandez de Avellaneda- a nom de plume whose identity remains a mystery to this day. Given the ambiguity of the novel's conclusion, the passage of several years with no sequel, and the lucrative endeavor that a second Quixote book was sure to be, it's understandable that another writer would throw his hat into the ring. However, the book's unauthorized nature and its preface's personal attacks on Cervantes earned the ire of Don Quixote's creator and eventually the disparaging label of 'the False Quixote.'Unbeknownst to Avellaneda, Cervantes was writing his own Quixote continuation, which he finished the following year. His Part II contains several references to Avellaneda, none of them kind. Cervantes learned from his 1605 mistake and closed out his Part II with no room for further sequels. Not only does he kill Quixote, he has a notary arrive to corroborate it. Not surprisingly, the demand for Avellaneda's novel has not held up well over time, though Nabokov, of all people, found it to have some merit, suggesting it was 'kinder' and 'more humane' than Cervantes's version, which he deemed brutal and cruel. Cervantes's two parts were frequently reprinted and were first translated into English in 1612 and 1620, respectively. Avellaneda's text, on the other hand, was not translated until much later, in 1705, so it received the misleading descriptor 'Third Volume.'" (The Case of the False Quixote By Meredith Mann, NYPL). A lovely copy of this miniature edition. Contemporary brown leather Simier of Paris signed Cathedral Binding, with profuse gilt decoration and armourial crest to the boards. Gilt design, titles and windmill to the spines. This binding is identical to one part of the British Library Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings. (See BL Shelfmark c150k11) A little rubbing to the bindings, with slight loss of gilt, but overall, in excellent condition. The hinges have been professionally restored at some point, in a way that is barely noticeable. Marbled end papers. Illustrated with 11 plates engraved by E Stalker (including Frontis) and a folding hand-colored map. Complete. Half title to each volume, and an engraved title on glossy paper, and a second engraved title. Vol. 1 has a frontispiece portrait of Cervantes, (portrait of Cervantes engraved by E. Stalker after José del Castillo's design). and 5 engraved plates. It ends with the beautiful miniature hand coloured map, showing Don Quixote s travels. Volume 2 offers 5 engraved plates. Inside, the books are in very good condition, but with a little darkening and moderate foxing to the pages. Still a very nice copy. This was the second edition of Don Quijote by Ferrar. The first was in one volume, this edition allowed better line spacing, and two extra plates. Originally issued in paper wrappers, this luxurious binding adds greatly to the attractiveness of this work. Nb. Many sources quote STAKKER as the engraver, but a close look at the engravings shows that it is E. STALKER. Christies commented in a recent auction that Ferrer was a great admirer of Cervantes and paid 30,000 francs in order to produce the first edition in miniature which includes his dedication to Cervantes after the title page. Collation: XX, 352, [ii], Map., XII, 378 pages. 125 by 80mm (5 by 3¼ inches). Palau, 25059; Rius, 89; Suñé, 96; Quixotes collector's manual, no. 41.1.

Engraved frontis. port. of Cervantes by Virtue, several engraved head-pieces, & 67 engraved plates. xxiii, [8], [xxv]-xxxii, vi, [2], 90, [14] (first leaf a blank), 355 pp.; xii, 388 pp. Two vols. Large 4to, cont. speckled calf (joints very expertly repaired), spines gilt, brown & green morocco lettering pieces on spines. London: J. & R. Tonson & R. Dodsley, 1742. First edition of this esteemed translation and a wonderful association copy; this set belonged to Edward Gibbon and bears his bookplate in each volume. Gibbon was known for the wide range of his reading and he refers to this work in several of his letters and writings. He clearly liked this text; he owned an Ibarra edition in Spanish (1782), two editions of Smollett's translation (1755 and 1770), and the present edition. Jarvis (1675-1739), was a portrait painter and translator. A part of the literary circle of Addison, Pope, and Swift, his stylized portraits of society ladies were very fashionable. Jarvis advised Sir Robert Walpole in forming his art collection and was appointed king's painter in 1723. "His major literary undertaking was an English translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote. Published posthumously in 1742 and frequently reprinted, it is generally acknowledged as being close in spirit to the original."-ODNB. The superb engravings are mostly signed by John Vanderbank (1694-1739), painter and draughtsman. They were first used in the 1738 quarto edition of Don Quixote issued by the Tonsons in the original Spanish. The 90 pages in Vol. I print the first English translation of Mayans & Siscar's important Life of Cervantes. Fine and handsome set with his fine armorial bookplate in each volume. Minor rubbing and wear to extremities.
