The Philadelphia, Commanded by William Bainbridge, ran aground at Tripoli Harbor in 1803 during the first Barbary War. The frigate was unsuccessful in its efforts to lighten its weight and sail back to open waters. The crew was captured. The frigate was soon recaptured by the Americans and destroyed.
