DHCPv6 is theDynamic Host Configuration Protocol for IPv6. Although IPv6's statelessaddress autoconfiguration removes the primary motivation for DHCP inIPv4, DHCPv6 can still be used to statefully assign addresses if thenetwork administrator desires more control over addressing. It can alsobe used to distribute information which is not otherwise discoverable;the most important case of this is the DNS server. Though, according toRFC 4339, DNS addresses can be sent through Neighbor Discovery Protocol. The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is an autoconfigurationprotocol used on IP networks. Computers that are connected to IPnetworks must be configured before they can communicate with othercomputers on the network. DHCP allows a computer to be configuredautomatically, eliminating the need for intervention by a networkadministrator. It also provides a central database for keeping track ofcomputers that have been connected to the network. This prevents twocomputers from accidentally being configured with the same IP address.
