Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The present volume, with the exception of the introductory chapter, consists of papers delivered at the workshop entitled 'The Impact of Supercomputers on the Next Decade of Computational Fluid Dynamics,' The workshop, which took place in Jerusalem, Israel during the week of December 16, 1984, was initiated by the National Science Foundation of the USA (NSF), by the Ministry of Science and Development, Israel (IMSD), and co-sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Office of Scientific Research of the U.S. Air Force (AFOSR), Tel Aviv University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The introductory chapter attempts to summarize what transpired at the workshop. The genesis of the workshop was an agreement between NSF and Il1S, signed in the spring of 1983, to conduct a series of bi-national work shops and symposia. This workshop represented the first activity spon sored under the agreement. The undersigned were selected by their respective national bodies to act as co-coordinators and organizers of the workshop. The first question that we faced was to decide upon a topic. In the past few years the field of CFD has mushroomed and consequently there have been many meetings, symposia, workshops, congresses, etc. …

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Within the DFG -Schwerpunktprogramm 'Stromungssimulation mit Hochleistungsrechnern' and within the activities of the French-German cooperation of CNRS and DFG a DFG symposium on 'Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) on Parallel Systems' was organized at the Institut fur Aerodynamik and Gasdynamik of the Stuttgart University, 9-10 December 1993. This symposium was attended by 37 scientists. The scientific program consisted of 18 papers that considered finite element, finite volume and a two step Taylor Galerkin algorithm for the numerical solution of the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations on massively parallel computers with MIMD and SIMD architecture and on work station clusters. Incompressible and compressible, steady and unsteady flows were considered including turbu lent combustion with complex chemistry. Structured and unstructured grids were used. High numerical efficiency was demonstrated by multiplicative, additive and multigrid methods. Shared memory, virtual shared memory and distributed memory systems were investigated, in some cases based on an automatic grid partitioning technique. Various methods for domain decomposition were investigated. The key point of these methods is the resolution of the inter face problem because the matrix involved can be block dense. Multilevel decomposition can be very efficient using multifrontal algorithm. The numerical methods include explicit and implicit schemes. In the latter case the system of equations is often solved by a Gauss -Seidel line re laxation technique.…

The development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has opened new areas of research and has significantly supplemented information available from experimental measurements. Scientific computing is directly responsible for such recent developments as the secondary instability theory of transition to turbulence, dynamical systems analyses of routes to chaos, ideas on the geometry of turbulence, direct simulations of turbulence, three-dimensional full-aircraft flow analyses, and so on. We believe that CFD has already achieved a status in the tool-kit of fluid mechanicians equal to that of the classical scientific techniques of mathematical analysis and laboratory experiment.…
