Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. "With Historical And Analytical Introductions To Each Play, Also Notes Explanatory And Critical, And A Life Of The Poet". Comprised of The Tragedies, The Comedies and the Histories. With "Portraits Engraved On Steel, From Daguerreotypes Of The Greatest And Most Intellectual Actors Of The Age, Taken In The Embodiment Of The Varied And Life-Like Characters Of Our Great National Poet". Not dated. They are all bound in half tan leather and marbled boards with five horizontal raised bands to spine with gilt decoration, with a red and a black title field with gilt titles. The boards are all very tight and flat and quite clean. The leather corners and spines of all the volumes have some scratches and tears. The end papers are all lightly foxed. The cut edges have dark brown tint and the fore and tail edges shiny and pale red. The text blocks are all very firmly attached to the boards. The Prelims, including the illustrated title pages, all show water damage as well as foxing. The foxing and water marks show on some pages throughout the block - and mostly in the Tragedies - but most of the pages are unmarked. The plays are printed in two columns and copiously illustrated. There are no dedications or annotations. Overall good condition. Very heavy - 496; 488 and 576 pages. Please contact us for cost of shipping.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Poor. No Jacket. THE COMPLETE WORKS OF SHAKSPERE [Sic], REVISED FROM THE ORIGINAL EDITIONS WITH HISTORICAL AND ANALYTICAL INTRODUCTIONS TO EACH PLAY, ALSO NOTES EXPLANATORY AND CRITICAL, AND A LIFE OF THE POET. (Vols. 1-3), Shakspere [Shakespeare, William]; introduction and notes stated as written by James Orchard Halliwell (see note below), hardcover, illustrated with many full-page engravings of mid-19th century actors in costume, 1850. BOOK CONDITION: all three volumes are in poor condition. Some pages are separating from the spine. Much foxing, age-tanning of pages, along with some stains. Some tears, but as far as I can tell, no missing text pages. No volume is a remainder or library book. No bookplate nor signature of previous owner of the three volumes. Marbled endpapers and gilt edges all around. The part-leather and mainly brown cloth boards are in poor condition for each volume: rubbing, scratches, tears. Four raised bands on spines. Part of the spine of the "Tragedies" volume is missing. 11 x 8, 576+496+ 516 = 1588 pages, 169 ounces (three volumes). XX Contents: Comedies volume (with notes following each play): The Tempest, The Two Gentlemen of Verona, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Measure for Measure, The Comedy of Errors, Twelfth Night or What You Will, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Merchant of Venice, Midsummer-Night's Dream, Taming of the Shrew, Winter's Tale, Love's Labour's Lost, All's Well That Ends Well. Tragedies volume (with notes): Hamlet, Prince of Denmark; Macbeth, Othello, the Moor of Venice; King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, Cymbeline, Coriolanus, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Timon of Athens, Troilus and Cressida. Histories volume (with notes): King John, King Richard the Second, First Part of King Henry the Fourth, Second Part of King Henry the Fourth, King Henry the Fifth, King Henry the Sixth, King Richard the Third, King Henry the Eighth. Poetry and essays on Shakespeare. XX I believe that what makes these Tallis volumes especially interesting is that James Orchard Halliwell speaks of them as a "pirated cheap edition," and disclaimed all responsibility for it. Cf. London Times, October, 1850. [Note from Justin Winsor, Halliwelliana, a Bibliography of the Publications of James Orchard Halliwell-Phillipps, 1881]. This is not to say that the text of the plays is incorrect, just that Halliwell did not benefit from the publication of this edition and that attaching his name to the volumes, especially the notes, was misleading. The notes may very well have been taken from Halliwell's numerous writings on Shakespeare, but the "Life of Shakespeare" and some of the introductions in the Tallis edition were written by Henry Tyrrell.…

Hardcover. Condición: Good. SHAKESPEARE, William (ed. Henry Tyrrell & J. O. Halliwell [attrib.]). The Complete Works of Shakspere: Revised from the Original Editions, with Historical and Analytical Introductions to each Play, also Notes Explanatory and Critical, and a Life of the Poet. London & New York: John Tallis/The London Printing & Publishing Company, c.1850. 4 vols. Quarto (28 × 19.5 cm). Half burgundy Morocco and red cloth boards. Covers margined in blind and decorated in gilt. Spine with raised bands, titled and elaborately decorated in gilt to compartments. All edges marbled. Marbled endpapers. Text in double columns, printed within double black lines. Vol. I: Comedies, 576 pp; Vol. II: Tragedies, 496 pp; Vol. III: Histories, 488 pp; Vol. IV: Doubtful Plays, 484 pp. Steel-engraved frontispiece, illustrated title page, and numerous steel-engraved portrait plates in each volume, depicting the greatest actors of the age from daguerreotypes. First edition thus. The Shakespeare edition that was famously disclaimed by its own listed editor, James Orchard Halliwell (1820-1889), one of the most distinguished Shakespeare scholars of the nineteenth century and a founder of the Shakespeare Society. Despite this, Halliwell himself wanted nothing to do with it. Halliwell described this as a "pirated cheap edition" and publicly disclaimed all responsibility for it in The Times in October 1850. This is an undoubtedly beautiful edition with a strong aesthetic befitting the period of its production. Particularly, the illustrations are wonderful. The steel-engraved portrait plates — reproduced from daguerreotypes of the most celebrated theatrical actors of the mid-Victorian stage — constitute a remarkable visual record of how Shakespeare was performed and received in the 1840s and 1850s. The actors depicted include the leading performers of the London stage: the daguerreotype was still a novelty when these plates were made, and their precision of likeness gives them a documentary character that more idealised theatrical portraiture cannot match. Each volume carries an engraved frontispiece and illustrated title page, with additional portrait plates distributed through the text. The edition is also notable for what it omits: following the editorial conventions of its period, Pericles and Titus Andronicus are absent from the text, reflecting the continuing nineteenth-century uncertainty about the authorship and canonical status of those plays. Good. Some rubbing and wear at edges and extremities of covers; binding sound in all volumes. Contents have toning, foxing, and portions of staining present in all volumes, stronger to preliminaries. Contents complete and generally in good order. A good working or reference set. Please note: This is a four-volume set and is heavy. Additional postage costs may apply. If so, we will contact you after purchase.…

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. Over-all the three volumes in the green book boards are in very good condition for there age. well look after. Book intact for there age. Over-all some foxing throughout the 3 volume. Readable print on the pages throughout the book. See photos for more information. The Complete Works of Shakspere, printed and published by John Tallis and Company (London and New York), is a highly celebrated and distinctive Victorian edition. While initially printed around 1850, it was reissued and rebound through the 1860s. The set is most commonly found as a 3-volume main text set (Comedies, Tragedies, and Histories/Poems), though it frequently includes a matching 4th volume containing the "Doubtful Plays. (Which is the only i don't have.) Volume Title : Content Focus Notable Material Included Volume I Comedies Features classics like The Tempest, Much Ado About Nothing, and As You Like It. Volume II Tragedies Contains Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and Romeo and Juliet. Volume III Histories and Poems Covers the English monarchical plays (e.g., Henry V, Richard III) alongside Shakespeare's sonnets. Because of the heavy iron content in mid-19th-century paper processing, this edition is highly prone to foxing (brown age spotting). The foxing is usually heaviest on the illustrated steel-engraved plates and the tissue guards protecting them. The Tissue Guards: Every steel-engraved actor portrait originally came with a thin sheet of translucent tissue paper to prevent ink from rubbing off onto the adjacent text page. These all are still present throughout the 3 volumes. . If the tissue guards are ripped out or heavily dark brown, it affects the value. (Which are all there in the three volumes). The green cloth set has only 3 volumes but covers Comedies, Tragedies, and Histories/Poems, it is considered complete. Extra charges for over-sea shipping due the weight exceed 500gram. Actual weight of the three book combined is 4.715kg.…
