Añadir al carritoWraps. Condición: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. The format is approximately 6.25 inches by 9.5 inches. [8], 48, [4] pages. [Sale Number 1974.] Illustrations. 236 numbered items presented for sale. Ex-library stamp on front and back covers. Text printed on front cover and spine. Cover has some wear and soiling. This presents a fascinating snapshot in time not only of fine, and now perhaps unique, examples of collectibles in the several categories, but also an example of the quality and scope of descriptive auction catalogues from one of the premier U.S. Art auction houses of the mid- and late-Twentieth Century. In art history, "Old Master" (or "old master") refers to any painter of skill who worked in Europe before about 1800, or a painting by such an artist. An "old master print" is an original print (for example an engraving, woodcut, or etching) made by an artist in the same period. The term "old master drawing" is used in the same way. In theory, "Old Master" applies only to artists who were fully trained, were Masters of their local artists' guild, and worked independently, but in practice, paintings produced by pupils or workshops are often included in the scope of the term. Therefore, beyond a certain level of competence, date rather than quality is the criterion for using the term. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the term was often understood as having a starting date of perhaps 1450 or 1470. The Oxford English Dictionary defines the term as "A pre-eminent artist of the period before the modern; esp. a pre-eminent western European painter of the 13th to 18th centuries." The arrival of Georg Swarzenski at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston opened a formative chapter for one of the most significant medieval collections on American soil. In a tremendously ambitious enterprise, which would be continued by his son Hanns after his retirement, Georg Swarzenski amassed a collection of significant quantity and outstanding quality in a surprisingly brief span of time. While the highlights of medieval art that the two Swarzenskis brought to Boston have been catalogued in the past, this essay looks instead to the larger framework that informed the careers of these two men, examining how their European training, experiences, and connections inflected their work. Rather than representing the Middle Ages through objects that were typical of various styles and genres, the Swarzenskis displayed remarkable initiative in seeking out acquisitions of extraordinary significance for an institution that had previously devoted little attention to collecting medieval art. Parke-Bernet Galleries was an American auction house, active from 1937 to 1964, when Sotheby's purchased it. The company was founded by a group of employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. By 1964, the company was the largest auction house in America, with 115 employees and total sales of $11 million ($108 million in 2023). That year, Sotheby's purchased a controlling interest of 75% in the gallery for $1.5 million ($15 million in 2023). The company was founded in 1937, by a group of forty former employees of the American Art Association, including Otto Bernet, Hiram H. Parke, Leslie A. Hyam, Lewis Marion and Mary Vandergrift. In January 1938, the first auction was held in a gallery at 742 Fifth Avenue. The next year, the company took over the American Art Association-Anderson Galleries, consisting of the American Art Association and the Anderson Galleries (formerly Anderson Auction Company). Parke-Bernet oversaw the sale of the estate of Georges Lurcy, a prominent art collector, whose estate included works by Raoul Dufy, Alfred Sisley and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The collection sold for over 2 million pounds in 1957, a record. Other customers of the company included Rockefellers, Vanderbilts, Paul Mellon and Henry Ford II. Ford's purchase of La Serre by Renoir through Parke-Bernet was a world record. Parke-Bernet also oversaw.…
